Prepare to be mesmerized at Sardine Run Moalboal, a truly exceptional dive site where millions of sardines form a permanent, swirling spectacle just off Panagsama Beach. Unlike seasonal migrations found elsewhere, this incredible phenomenon is a year-round event, making it one of the most reliable and accessible big-fish dives in Asia.

The Dive Experience

Divers will find this a remarkably easy and rewarding experience, suitable for beginners with an Open Water certification. We typically begin with a simple shore entry, and within just a few fin kicks, we are immersed in the heart of the action. The sardine school typically hovers between 5 and 15 m, making it accessible for snorkelers and Open Water divers alike. The reef wall itself plunges dramatically, offering a maximum depth of around 35 m for recreational divers to explore. As you descend, you'll witness the dense bait-ball constantly shifting and reforming into breathtaking living sculptures, a truly hypnotic display of nature's synchronicity. The currents here are generally mild, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable dive for all skill levels.

Marine Life Encounters

While the sheer volume of sardines (Sardinella spp.) is the undisputed star, the vibrant ecosystem around this dive site offers much more:

• Sardines: Millions of these shimmering fish create an awe-inspiring, ever-changing backdrop, often blocking out the sun with their density.
• Turtles: We frequently encounter resident Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) gracefully gliding along the reef or resting in crevices.
• Predators: Keep an eye out for larger pelagic species drawn to this abundant food source. Bigeye Trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus), jacks, and tuna are common sights, darting in to hunt the edges of the school.
• Elusive Sharks: Lucky divers might even spot the occasional Pelagic Thresher Shark (Alopias pelagicus) making a cameo, or even a Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) attracted to the concentrated food source.
• Macro Life: For those with a keen eye, Frogfish (Antennariidae spp.) and various nudibranchs can be found nestled among the corals.

Conditions and Logistics

Water temperatures are consistently warm, ranging from 26°C to 30°C year-round. Visibility typically ranges from 10 to 30 meters, offering clear views of the incredible underwater spectacle. As this is a popular shore dive, divers should be aware of occasional boat traffic in the area, particularly when surfacing.
