    Read source context

Multiple sources indicate that Shark Airport and Tubbataha Reefs generally experience strong or variable currents, not just moderate. While some sources might mention 'mild to moderate' currents, the overall consensus points to stronger conditions, particularly for drift dives and pelagic encounters, making 'moderate' an underrepresentation of the potential current strength.

About This Dive Site

Shark Airport in Tubbataha: partial guide

This record is Shark Airport at Tubbataha's North Atoll, as listed by Palau Sport. It is distinct from the similarly named Apo Reef site. Master Liveaboards describes a coral plateau and a deeper shelf, with resting whitetip reef sharks explaining the airport comparison.

Terrain and reported marine life

The plateau and shelf measurements in the operator itinerary are feature depths, not proven whole-site limits or a required dive profile. Palau Sport also describes a wall and sandy bottom. The Philippine Aggressor log dated 21 March 2026 reports whitetip and blacktip sharks, Napoleon wrasse and jacks at Shark Airport. Its separate Shark Airport 2 entry is not combined with this site's observations.

Before choosing a dive

This partial guide supports the site's identity and a broad description, but does not verify a precise entry point, today's conditions or encounter frequency. Ask the liveaboard which Shark Airport route is planned and whether it includes the plateau, shelf or wall. Wildlife observations and itinerary examples are not guarantees of what will be seen or which stop will be visited.

Where the park and visiting divers place it

The Tubbataha Management Office's monitoring stations put Shark Airport in the northern part of North Atoll: its 2019 station was described as "over long sand flat and drop off", and the site was surveyed again in June 2023 (Ecosystem Research and Monitoring Report 2024, station appendix). Stephen Frink's Alert Diver article of 1 August 2018 reached it after an overnight steam to the northeast edge of North Atoll and describes whitetip reef sharks lying along runways of sand that separate the coral ridges, with cleaning stations where normally reclusive fish were easier to approach. Bill Stewart's ScubaBoard report of May 2009 says the reef top where his group dropped in was around 50 feet, and that his dives here, like most at Tubbataha, were drifts along the wall with a boat pickup.

Counted sharks, not promised sharks

In TMO's 2025 underwater visual survey, two transects at Shark Airport of about 820 and 671 metres recorded 49 sharks (32 whitetip and 17 grey reef), the second-highest count of the nine sites surveyed that year. That is a survey result from June 2025, not a forecast for any dive. Dated trip reports vary: the Philippine Aggressor II log of 30 May 2026 used the site for a checkout dive with snappers, turtles, tuna and patrolling reef sharks, and later that week barracuda, jacks and an octopus; the same vessel's 21 March 2026 log adds drummers, a marble ray and golden trevally; Lakwatsero's log of 7 May 2011 records sharks chasing a giant trevally and a devil ray on a second visit; cbartazo.com's log of May 2011 records a giant manta on one dive.

Current and depth as divers logged them

The WWF Coral Triangle blog's dive of 12 April 2009 began quietly over white sand at about 10 metres with two resting whitetips and garden eels, then the current turned and strengthened until the group surfaced early. Logged maximum depths from individual dives are 29.5 and 24.2 metres (Lakwatsero, 2011) and 32.0 and 25.5 metres (cbartazo.com, 2011); these are route depths from specific dives, not a whole-site range, and they sit well below the operator plateau and shelf figures quoted earlier. Fly and Sea and Liquid Diving Adventures (October 2020) both describe the site as relatively shallow and used for night dives, which does not establish that a night dive is on your vessel's schedule.

Hazards & Safety

Be aware of these potential hazards at this dive site

Strong current

Severity: High

Strong and variable currents are common, especially on wall dives and channels, and can change direction quickly.

Dangerous marine life

Severity: Medium

Triggerfish may be protecting their nests, and divers should avoid moving directly over them into their 'strikezone.'

Certification Required

A minimum of Advanced Open Water certification is required to dive this site.
