The Marble Ray (Taeniurops meyeni), also widely known as the Blotched Fantail Ray or Round Ribbontail Ray, is a magnificent species belonging to the Dasyatidae family of stingrays. This impressive ray is a frequent and captivating sight for divers across its extensive Indo-Pacific range.

Currently, the Marble Ray is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, facing threats primarily from commercial fishing and habitat degradation across much of its distribution. These rays typically inhabit tropical and warm-temperate waters, preferring sandy substrates, reef rubble, rocky reefs, and caves. They are commonly found at depths of 20–60 meters, though they can range from shallow lagoons to outer reef slopes, with recorded depths extending to 500 meters. Water temperatures where they are found typically range from 23–29°C.

Generally nocturnal, Marble Rays often spend their days resting motionless on the sand, under ledges, or within caves, becoming more active predators at night. Their diet consists of small benthic fishes, molluscs, crustaceans, and shrimp, which they uncover by pressing their disc against the bottom and using water pumped through their mouths to "wash" out buried prey. While not typically aggressive, they possess a venomous tail spine for defense and have been responsible for at least one human fatality when provoked. Divers may encounter them singly or in groups, sometimes accompanied by jacks or cobia. Notable dive sites where this species has been observed include Mawan (occasional), Mapating (occasional), and Alimatha Jetty (common).

Identification

  • Size: The Marble Ray is one of the largest stingray species, reaching an impressive maximum disc width of 1.8 meters (6 feet). Including its tail, it can attain a total length of up to 3.3 meters (11 feet) and weigh up to 150 kg.
  • Disc Shape: It possesses a thick, sub-circular pectoral fin disc that is slightly wider than long, with a smoothly rounded outer margin.
  • Coloration: The dorsal (upper) surface is highly distinctive, featuring a base color of grey that can vary from light to dark, brown-grey, or even purplish. This is overlaid with a variable pattern of irregular darker blotches, mottling, and white speckles or streaks, which become more intense towards the fin margins. The ventral (underside) surface is creamy-white, often with darker fin margins or additional dots. Younger rays tend to exhibit plainer coloration.
  • Skin Texture: The disc is covered in small granular denticles or tubercles, giving it a slightly rough texture. Small patches of thornlets may be present on each shoulder and along the midline.
  • Head Features: It has a short, broadly rounded snout with a small, protruding lobe at the tip. The small eyes are followed by larger spiracles.

Its habitat preferences are diverse, allowing it to thrive in a variety of coastal and offshore environments:

  • Ecosystems: Marble Rays are primarily associated with vibrant coral and rocky reef systems, but they are also common inhabitants of shallow lagoons and estuaries. They are often observed near reef margins and along the continental shelf and slope.
  • Depth Range: While generally found at depths of 20–60 m, the Marble Ray exhibits a remarkable depth tolerance. Individuals can be encountered in very shallow waters, even the surf zone, and have been recorded at impressive depths of up to 439 m or even 500 m.
  • Substrate Preference: This species shows a clear preference for soft bottom substrates. Divers will typically find Marble Rays resting on sandy or rubble bottoms. They also frequent rocky, boulder, and gravel-strewn slopes. During the day, they are often observed resting motionless on sand near reef structures, or seeking shelter in caves and under ledges.

Geographically, the Marble Ray boasts a wide distribution, stretching from the Red Sea and East Africa, northward along the East African coast, through the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia and Micronesia. Its range extends as far north as southern Japan and south to tropical Australia, including Lord Howe Island. In the eastern Pacific, it is known from oceanic islands such as Cocos Island and the Galápagos Islands.

For divers, Marble Rays are usually docile and non-aggressive, often allowing for close observation when approached slowly and calmly. They are considered quite easy to approach, though they will retreat if harassed. Divers should maintain neutral buoyancy and minimize noise and sudden movements to avoid startling the ray. Notable Seasonal Patterns

Marble Rays are ovoviviparous, meaning the females retain eggs internally until they hatch, giving birth to live young. Litters are typically small, consisting of up to seven pups. Distinct pairing with embrace has been observed during reproduction. Detailed mating sequences, lasting approximately three hours, have been documented in the wild, involving behaviors such as males biting the female's pectoral fin and ventral-to-ventral copulation. These reproductive events may be linked to stable warm water temperatures, around 24°C. While specific seasonal migrations are not widely documented, divers may observe increased activity or aggregations related to breeding during periods of favorable water temperature.
