As one of the largest rays in the world, it belongs to the family Mobulidae and is currently listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This species is a smaller relative of the Giant Oceanic Manta Ray (*Mobula birostris*), typically found in shallower, more coastal habitats around coral and rocky reefs, as well as productive coastlines with consistent upwelling. Reef manta rays are widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the Indian and West Pacific Oceans, with notable aggregations in locations such as the Maldives, Komodo, Nusa Penida, and Kona (Hawaiʻi).
