About This Dive Site
Deep Rock and the northern pinnacle accounts
Deep Rock is described by Sea Explorers as a small underwater pinnacle near Malapascua. Kokay’s Malapascua Diving explicitly uses the combined name Ubang Bato / Deep Rock, while Malapascua Exotic Island Dive Resort lists Ubang Bato. Diveity also has a separate Ubang Bato guide, and the relationship between these records remains unresolved. The operator’s combined name does not establish that both mapped records describe the same landmark. Confirm the exact site and route with the operator. Deep Slope is listed separately by local operators and should not be treated as another name for this dive.
Why the depth figures differ
The published accounts do not establish one agreed depth range. Thresher Shark Divers describes a slope beginning at 5 metres and reaching 22 metres, despite a separate 25 m heading. Its contributed PADI entry also describes 5–22 metres and lists a 22 m maximum. Those pages share a source lineage and do not independently verify each other.
Sea Explorers instead describes a pinnacle top around 14–16 metres. Kokay’s Ubang Bato / Deep Rock page gives a top at 14 metres, a drop to sand at 28 metres and a separate maximum-depth field of 30 metres. Exotic’s Ubang Bato profile is 15–30 metres. Scubago describes a 14 m top and a deepest section at 34 metres. Different routes, boundaries or naming practices may account for some differences, but this review has not resolved them. Do not combine these figures into a supposedly surveyed range or use them as a personal dive plan.
Coral habitat and reported wildlife
The pinnacle descriptions emphasize soft corals, sea fans, sponges and small animals around the rock. Sea Explorers reports frogfish, nudibranchs, shrimp and crabs, while Kokay’s account mentions cuttlefish and schooling batfish. These are attributed descriptions, not recent sightings or promises. Reports of pygmy seahorses do not by themselves establish an exact species, encounter frequency or reliable season.
Experience, currents and boat arrangements
Exotic lists Advanced Open Water as the minimum certification for its Ubang Bato offering and describes the depth as suitable for more experienced divers. That requirement belongs to its named offering; confirm the operator’s prerequisites for the actual route you book. Current descriptions also vary: Kokay’s says usually none, whereas Scubago describes intermediate to strong flow during tide changes. Plan around a current briefing rather than assuming the quieter description applies on arrival.
Published journey times vary between operators and are not interchangeable departure schedules. Ask where the boat leaves, which site name the crew uses and how conditions affect the intended route.
What remains uncertain
The existing map point has not been moved or independently verified by this review. Regional Malapascua visibility and temperature ranges should not be treated as measurements from this pinnacle. Confirm current access, fees and conditions locally. Dated corrections clarifying the shallow slope versus pinnacle descriptions would be especially useful for improving this partial guide.
