Golden Passage: A Premier Drift Dive in Komodo National Park

Prepare for an exhilarating drift dive at Golden Passage, a renowned dive site threading the slim channel between Gili Lawa Darat and the northeastern tip of Komodo Island. This site earns its evocative name from both the gilded soft corals adorning the mid-channel saddle and the honeyed light that bathes the strait at sunrise and sunset.

Diving Conditions and Certification

Golden Passage is an advanced dive site, characterized by its strong currents. We recommend this dive for certified divers holding an Advanced Open Water certification, as it demands experience in navigating dynamic underwater conditions. The water temperature in this northern Komodo region is typically warm, ranging from 27°C to 30°C, with a common average of 28°C.

The Dive Experience

Typically dived on a rising tide, Golden Passage offers a classic east-to-west drift. Divers will launch from a shallow eastern bay, allowing the powerful current to carry them across a vibrant underwater landscape. The dive site features stunning coral gardens, bommies, and a sandy floor where you can observe a variety of marine life. The maximum depth divers will typically reach is around 20 to 25 meters, though sections of the channel can be shallower, with a saddle rising to about 10 meters.

While the strong currents provide an exhilarating ride, divers should be mindful of potential boat traffic in the channel and maintain good buoyancy, particularly in shallower areas.

Marine Life Encounters

Golden Passage is an underwater highway teeming with diverse marine life. As you drift, divers can encounter several species of sharks, including the majestic Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus), Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), and Grey Reef Shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), often found resting in the lee of boulders or patrolling the reef.

Keep an eye out for graceful Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) grazing on the slopes, and schools of vibrant Oriental Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus vittatus) and impressive Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) navigating the currents. Lucky divers may even spot the iconic Reef Manta Ray (Mobula alfredi) gliding through the passage.

For those with a keen eye for macro life, the sandy patches are home to charming Spotted Garden Eels (Heteroconger hassi) swaying in the current. Intricate critters like the camouflaged Leaf Scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) and the elusive Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti) can be found hidden among the corals. We also frequently observe large Napoleon Wrasse and elegant Eagle Rays in this vibrant channel.
