An offshore reef with deeper features
Anilao Diving and Resorts describes Mapating as a reef with a drop-off and variable currents, using a 5–40 m range. Marco Vincent Divers lists Mapating, labelled Shark Cave, at 16–42 m. These are operator profiles rather than a surveyed boundary.
Keep the reef outing distinct from cave access
The checked descriptions do not establish the cave’s dimensions, branching layout or a suitable penetration route. A reference to a cave does not make it part of an ordinary reef dive. Confirm exactly which feature the operator proposes to visit; this guide does not supply a cave plan or gas recommendation.
Conditions and wildlife
Eagle Point Resort describes Mapating as a site for experienced divers because of strong currents. The name and older reports of animals do not establish present shark residency or reliable encounter rates. This partial guide does not carry forward the earlier precise tunnel geometry or first-person wildlife claims.
Operator profiles of the reef and the cave
Anilao Diving and Resorts' Mapating page, last modified in June 2023, describes a shallow reef in the mid ocean about 22 minutes by banca boat from its resort, with a shallow point bigger than Bahura's, current that can often be slight to strong with no fixed direction, scattered big rock formations and a dense population of soft corals in the shallow area, lots of reef fish, chevron barracudas in small groups and rainbow runners near the drop-off, and visibility of 25 m plus in good conditions. It places a big cave at the 40 m end of the drop-off line and warns of strong waves during the rainy season or habagat west winds. Eagle Point Resort's dive-site page, in a Wayback snapshot of April 2026, lists Mapating [Shark] Rock southwest of Sepoc Point, about 20 minutes by boat, with an average depth of 65 ft and a maximum of 130 ft, describes a submerged rock surrounded by a shallow area that ends in a series of drop-offs, and says the currents really are fierce and the site is for experienced divers only. Scubatech Philippines gives Mapating Rock a 20 to 40 m range with strong current for experienced divers only; Bambu Villa's depth table gives 20 to 40 m; Aqua-Venture's table, in a January 2026 snapshot, lists Mapating at 40 m with moderate current and an underwater cave as the attraction.
A technical cave dive in one first-hand account
Ram Yoro's DivePhotoGuide trip report of January 2020 describes Mapating Cave as a dive for very experienced and technical divers only, involving depths beyond recreational limits, extended overhead environments, planned decompression and open blue-water ascents and descents. In his account the top of Mapating Reef is at 60 ft, the drop-off leads to a cave entrance at 150 ft about 30 ft across with a mermaid statue on the left, and the cave divides at a Y-junction into two tunnels. He says the name means lots of sharks in the local dialect, that the earliest divers found the entrance full of sleeping whitetips, that the sharks are now gone, and that the entrance area is home to huge marble rays while eyelight fish show bioluminescence inside; he also says dives must be timed around slack tide. That is one dated account, not a cave survey, and it does not supply a penetration plan. A ScubaBoard post of September 2010 likewise calls Mapating Cave a challenging deep dive, says there are normally no sharks and mentions marble rays. Solitude World's article, published in April 2024, instead gives 15 to 40 m and potential reef and hammerhead shark encounters, and Underwater Asia's undated guide says the rock has a cave where whitetip reef sharks sleep. These sources disagree on present shark presence and are not reconciled here.
