About This Dive Site

A deep cave feature off Mactan

Emerald Green Diving Center describes Marigondon Cave as a deep feature, with its entrance reported around 30–38 m and an interior reaching about 40 m. Those numbers describe parts of the cave; they do not resolve the listing's disputed minimum-depth evidence.

Separate the wall from cave entry

The operator mentions an underwater light and positions the site for more experienced visitors. Its description is not a complete cave-diving plan or proof that a recreational qualification is sufficient for entering an overhead environment.

Confirm the intended visit

Ask whether an offered dive stays outside the entrance or includes an overhead section, and what specialist training and equipment that route requires. This partial guide establishes the named feature and its reported depth context; it does not verify current access, visibility or suitability for an individual diver.

The cave in the archaeological record

John A. Peterson, Andrea Jalandoni and Carmen Rocha's 2017 archaeological study documents research conducted in May 2011. Their surveyed entrance has its top at about 30 metres and floor at about 40 metres, with an opening roughly 10 metres high and 13 metres wide. They describe a main chamber extending about 33 metres and a further side chamber of about 17 metres. These are historical survey measurements of particular features, not a current recreational route or a replacement for the guide's unresolved whole-site depth range.

The researchers investigated whether deposits might preserve evidence from periods when the cave stood above sea level. They did not find archaeological deposits during the project. Plastic and netting in one excavation area indicated disturbed material; work farther inside encountered suspended silt and absent natural light. The study therefore offers a geological and research history, not proof that people occupied the cave. Its technical fieldwork methods are not visitor instructions, and an operator's use of the word advanced does not establish qualifications for an overhead dive.

Feature descriptions have different scopes

Coral Sea Dive Center describes a larger opening and an interior distance of about 70 metres. That operator account and the archaeological survey do not describe identical measured chamber segments, so their numbers are not averaged into a single cave length. The operator also describes bubbles emerging above the cave after its dives, an attributed observation rather than an assurance about a particular route.

The historical Diving Guide to the Philippines reports black corals and encrusting sponges around the entrance, with flashlight fish farther inside and crabs in recesses. These published habitat observations are not current sightings and do not justify entering the overhead area to look for wildlife.

Hazards & Safety

Be aware of these potential hazards at this dive site

Strong current

Severity: High

Strong to very strong currents can occur along the wall, especially between tides. Divers should check conditions before descent.

Overhead environment

Severity: Medium

While technically a cavern and not a true cave (natural light is always visible), it is still an overhead environment requiring advanced certification and good buoyancy control to avoid silting.

Silting

Severity: Medium

The cavern floor has fine silt that can easily be kicked up, reducing visibility. Excellent buoyancy control is essential.

Depth

Severity: Medium

The entrance is below 30 meters, making it a deep dive that requires appropriate certification and experience.

Certification Required

A minimum of Advanced Open Water certification is required to dive this site.
