The accepted record states a minimum temperature of 26°C. However, ScubaSnap reports winter water temperatures for Masaplod Sanctuary ranging from 24.0°C to 28.0°C, indicating a potential minimum temperature of 24°C, which is outside the accepted range.

About This Dive Site
Masaplod South, also called Masaplod Sur, combines coral reef and sandy habitat on the Dauin coast of Negros Oriental. Mahi Mahi Dive Resort describes two separate reefs supporting hard and soft corals. Its named southern-site account reports sea moths, pipefish and anemonefish. These are reported possibilities, not guaranteed encounters or a recent census.
Confirm the southern site
Masaplod Norte and Dauin Sur are separate named sites. A booking or briefing that says only “Masaplod Sanctuary” is not enough to establish which reef is intended. The Institute for Marine Research’s 2019 report specifically identifies Masaplod Sur reef within Barangay Masaplod Sur, and its map labels Norte, Sur and Dauin Sur separately. Scubago also records Kagamas as a name for Masaplod Sur; confirm local usage before treating that name as the same planned route.
Reef character and depth
Atmosphere’s dive-site sheet describes a grassy approach, reef beginning around 8 metres, and a sandy slope with soft corals, staghorn corals and scattered shallow boulders. It gives a maximum depth of 25 metres. Dumaguete.com’s named Masaplod Sur entry instead lists 20 metres and describes reef patches, sandy gullies and artificial habitat made from tyres. These are different published dive profiles, not a surveyed agreement on the site’s deepest boundary. Neither establishes the existing 30-metre figure as a verified limit.
The operator accounts suggest a dive with both reef scenery and small subjects to search for. Ask which reef patch and depth range the guide plans to visit, rather than assuming the whole area will be covered. Mahi Mahi describes its route as gentle and suitable for different experience levels, while Dumaguete.com lists Open Water Diver or above. Neither replaces an assessment of the day’s conditions and the group’s skills.
Historical ecology, current uncertainty
The 2019 research report provides a named monitoring record for this reef. A separate 2022 marine-biology thesis by Leo Arleborg examined crown-of-thorns predation on selected corals at Masaplod Sur Marine Protected Area. Its findings concern the monitored colonies and study period, not every reef patch or today’s coral condition. Descriptions of healthy coral in operator material should therefore not be read as a current condition assessment.
Recent site-specific visibility, water temperature, current strength and reliable seasonal boundaries remain unconfirmed in this review. Survey sampling months do not establish the best diving season. Confirm present access, any sanctuary arrangements and the intended entry and exit with a local operator. The existing map point has not been independently verified or moved.
Bongo Bongo describes a muddy gorge dividing two areas within Masaplod Sur, with a coral slope on its northern side and muck-and-reef habitat to the south. This is the operator’s internal site description, not a boundary survey or evidence that Masaplod Norte is the same site.
