About This Dive Site
Santa Rosa, Olango Island
This guide concerns Santa Rosa off Olango Island near Mactan, Cebu, Philippines. It is distinct from Santa Rosa Wall in Cozumel, Mexico. Scotty's Action Sports Network places the Olango site south of Talima and describes a sloping, sandy plateau with scattered corals followed by a wall.
Terrain and dive planning
Scotty's describes the slope beginning around 5 metres, reaching a wall around 18 metres, with deeper terrain down to 50 metres. Asia Dive Site's named Santa Rosa account instead places the drop-off around 15 metres. The difference is retained as an attributed feature-depth uncertainty, not a claim that the entire reef begins at either drop-off depth.
The operator highlights juvenile fish around coral patches and small subjects for photography. Sightings and suitable routes vary; this account is not a recent survey or a guarantee of encounters.
Confirm the Olango location, intended reef section, conditions and planned depth with your operator. Its quoted boat time is specific to its own Mactan base. This partial guide does not establish current access fees, a fixed timetable, legal sanctuary boundaries or a universal experience requirement.
Where the site sits on Olango
Scotty's Action Sports Network's Santa Rosa page, as captured by the Wayback Machine on 30 November 2023, places the dive site at the south end of the Talima diving spot, both on Olango Island, about 4 kilometres and ten minutes by boat from its own dive centre. A Polaris Dive Center description reprinted on Bohol-Philippines.com (snapshot of 8 November 2024) says Santa Rosa lies next to the Talima Sanctuary going south and is located 400 metres offshore from the village of Sta. Rosa and Poo, with a 15 to 20 minute outrigger ride. Asia Dive Site quotes 20 minutes by boat from Mactan Island. The quoted times differ because they are measured from different departure points; none is a universal travel time.
What the dated accounts describe
Scotty's describes the top of the wall as sandy with scattered corals where reef fish shoal, calls it a fish nursery with many schools of larvae and fish fry, and says the site is well known for underwater macro photography because of the critters, fingerlings and juvenile fish living around the coral blocks. Asia Dive Site's account lists a good variety of reef fish in the shallows and fusiliers, catfish, jacks, snappers and sweetlips further down. The Polaris text adds that visibility is up to 100 feet over the drop-off but muddy on the shallow reef-flat towards shore, that currents are normally strong yet more predictable, and that beginners should be accompanied by a dive master. Seven Seas Dive Center's 2020 site list calls Santa Rosa one of the lesser visited but no less spectacular wall dives on the far side of Olango. These are dated observations by their authors, not a current survey.
Planning notes from the sources
Scotty's rates the site as well suited to all levels, with open water divers on the slope before the wall and experienced divers with the bigger fish, and recommends nitrox and an underwater camera. The Asia Dive Site and Polaris texts share the same drop-off wording and are treated here as one lineage, so the 15 metre versus 18 metre wall-top difference noted above rests on two independent descriptions, not three. Santa Rosa is also the name of a barangay on Olango, which is why the village is used as a landmark; the Lapu-Lapu City environmental-fee list reported by SunStar on 30 December 2023 does not name a Santa Rosa dive site, so any fee arrangement for this site remains unconfirmed here.
