Sharon's Serenity (Klein Bonaire)
True to its name, Sharon's Serenity offers divers a tranquil and captivating experience off the southwest corner of Klein Bonaire. This dive site is renowned for its calm conditions and vibrant marine ecosystem, making it a favorite for both new and experienced divers alike. We find it to be a perfect introduction to the pristine reefs of Klein Bonaire.
Dive Conditions
As a beginner-friendly dive site, Sharon's Serenity is accessible to those holding an Open Water Diver certification. Divers will find a reef structure that begins in shallow coral gardens, transitioning into a gentle slope and then a more pronounced drop-off. The reef depth ranges from approximately 6 m in the shallows down to 30 m. However, we recommend a maximum recreational depth of 20 m to fully appreciate the site's beauty.
The current at Sharon's Serenity is typically mild, making for relaxed navigation and comfortable diving. Water temperatures are consistently warm, generally ranging from 26°C to 29°C, ensuring pleasant dives year-round. Visibility is often excellent, characteristic of Bonaire's clear waters.
Underwater Landscape
The underwater landscape here is a stunning display of Caribbean reef health. Divers will explore a beautiful coral garden crowded with impressive hard coral formations, including expansive Elkhorn Coral (Acropora palmata) and intricate Staghorn Coral (Acropora sp.) in the shallower sections. As we descend, the reef gives way to a sloping wall adorned with a rich variety of hard and soft corals, offering a diverse and picturesque backdrop for exploration.
Marine Life
Sharon's Serenity is teeming with a diverse array of marine life. We frequently encounter vibrant reef fish such as the striking Stoplight Parrotfish (Sparisoma viride) and the ubiquitous Doctorfish (Acanthurus chirurgus) gracefully navigating the corals. Look closely, and you might spot the small, territorial Bicolor Damselfish (Stegastes partitus) darting amongst the branches.
For those with a keen eye, Green Moray Eels (Gymnothorax funebris) are often found tucked into crevices and coral heads. Keep an eye out in the blue for the sleek Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) patrolling the reef edge. One of the true highlights for many divers is the chance to observe the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) gracefully gliding through the water or resting on the reef. This dive site is also particularly famous for its night dives, when the fascinating Giant Basket Star (Astrophyton muricatum) unfurls its intricate arms to feed, transforming the reef into a mesmerizing nocturnal spectacle.
Planning Your Dive
Access to Sharon's Serenity, like all Klein Bonaire dive sites, is exclusively by boat. The mooring buoy is conveniently located close to shore, making it an excellent site for both scuba divers and snorkelers. While generally calm, divers should be aware of potential boat traffic near the surface, especially when ascending or descending. We always recommend carrying a surface marker buoy and exercising caution in high-traffic areas. Sharon's Serenity is truly a serene and rewarding dive site that we believe every diver visiting Bonaire should experience.
