Thaumoctopus mimicus
About Mimic Octopus.
The mimic octopus has long, narrow arms and distinctive white markings on its mantle. Its appearance changes, so a single colour pattern is not a complete identification key. Norman and Hochberg’s original species description describes the diagnostic markings and anatomy. The size and conservation fields have not been independently reconciled in this partial review.
Where it lives.
This species forages during daylight over shallow, soft sediment. The original study reports shallow-water records; those records do not establish a universal depth limit or the likelihood of an encounter at a particular dive site. Habitat source.
How it behaves.
Responsible observation
Avoid seabed contact, manipulating animals and close camera flashes. See Green Fins guidance.
These references support general guidance, not a recent sighting or an encounter guarantee. This is a partial guide; local information can be corrected as evidence improves.
