The BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) is the most complex piece of recreational dive equipment and the one that most divides opinion. BCD style affects how you trim in the water, how much lift is available, travel weight, and comfort out of the water.
BCD Style Comparison
| Style | Lift Location | Best For | Typical Weight | Learning Curve |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jacket / Wraparound | Around the torso | Beginners, warm-water recreational diving | 2.5–4 kg | Low |
| Backplate and Wing | Behind the diver (wing inflates at back) | Experienced divers, technical progression, cold water | Variable (modular) | Medium-High |
| Travel / Lightweight | Around the torso | Frequent travellers, warm-water diving | 1.2–2 kg | Low |
| Sidemount | Sides / chest | Overhead environments, technical diving | Variable | High |
Jacket-Style BCDs
The most common recreational BCD style. Air fills a bladder that wraps around the diver's torso, providing lift on the front, sides, and back. At the surface, a fully inflated jacket BCD keeps you face-up, which is reassuring for newer divers. The downside is that at depth, air redistributes to the bladder sections rather than centralising behind you, which can affect trim.
Backplate and Wing
A backplate (metal or plastic plate worn against your back) and a wing (air cell that inflates behind you). The modular design is highly customisable and scales to technical configurations with double tanks. Divers with a BP/W typically achieve flatter horizontal trim more easily than with jacket BCDs. The learning curve is steeper, and some find the minimal padding less comfortable out of the water.
Key Features to Consider
- Lift capacity: Should exceed your maximum weighting by at least 5 kg. Most recreational BCDs provide 14–22 kg of lift.
- Integrated weight pockets: Quick-release weight integration is more convenient than a separate weight belt for many divers.
- D-rings and attachment points: At minimum, you need two D-rings to attach an SMB spool and a cutting tool.
- Dump valves: Should include at least a shoulder dump and a hip dump for quick air release in any body position.
