About This Dive Site

A reef with exposed conditions

Eagle Point Resort describes Beatrice Rock northeast of Sombrero Island, with slopes, a small wall and potentially strong currents.

Depth depends on the feature described

The source’s depth figures vary between its summary and narrative. The earlier guide also combined a deeper feature called Beatrice 2 with this record; that relationship remains unverified in this review. Confirm the precise feature and proposed profile before choosing an outing.

What this guide can establish

Corals and reef fish appear in the operator’s description, but it is not a dated wildlife survey. This partial guide does not promise particular species, encounter frequencies or calm conditions at a particular tide.

Sand patches and smaller reef subjects

Solitude World describes sandy areas between coral formations at Beatrice Rock and reports frogfish, lionfish and nudibranchs. This adds habitat and subject detail to the broader reef description. The account supplies no observation dates or encounter rates, and does not establish where those animals can be found on a particular dive.

How operators place and profile the rock

Eagle Point Resort's dive-site page, in a Wayback Machine snapshot of 13 April 2026, puts Beatrice Rock on the northeast side of Sombrero Island, about 15 minutes by boat from its pier, with an average depth of 45 feet and a maximum of 90 feet. It describes one side of the rock as sloping into a mini wall and the other corner as a gradual slope or coral garden, with large barrel sponges, gorgonians, black corals, soft and stony corals, anemones with clownfish, nudibranchs and sea stars. The same page says the site was named after a woman called Beatrice who accompanied early Anilao divers; that is the resort's story, not a documented record.

The Anilao Diving operator guide describes Beatrice 1 as one big rock in the middle of a shallow reef between Sombrero and Beatrice 2, with a 10 to 30 m profile and a slightly steep drop-off to a sandy bed. It reports wahoo, tuna, schooling emperors, barracuda and anthias near the top of the rock, and recommends a negative-buoyancy backward-roll entry in moderate current, a circular route around the rock and a safety stop on the anchor or buoy line. It lists Beatrice 2, sometimes called Larry's Garden, as a separate 25 to 40 m site northwest of Beatrice 1 for advanced divers. Pacific Blue's Japanese-language page, in a snapshot of 17 May 2026, likewise lists Beatriz I and II as submerged pinnacles north of Sombrero, topping out near 3 m and 35 m respectively, and Aqua-Venture's table gives 30 m and 40 m, both with strong current. These pages describe two features; this guide still does not merge them.

Current and timing in dated reports

Eagle Point Resort calls conditions calm with strong currents, exposed enough to get very rough at times, best dived at neap tides, with visibility up to 80 feet. In a ScubaBoard thread of September 2010 one diver named Beatrice a favourite non-macro site in the morning because current tends to be strong in the afternoon and around full moon, and another wrote that Bahura and Beatrice Rock can have currents serious enough that boats avoid anchoring. Scubatech Philippines' guide, first published in 2012, describes short drop-offs divided by deep channels at 14 to 27 m with moderate current, the same figures as Bambu Villa's table. Anders' Philippines dive notes on colours.dk, copyright 1998 to 2007, place the site off Maricaban Island and report corals, barrel sponges, nudibranchs, moray eels, lionfish, crinoids and mantis shrimps, adding that the current can be fierce. X-Ray Mag's Anilao feature of December 2014 describes anthias in a mild current above a reef densely encrusted with crinoids. REEF's volunteer fish-survey database lists Beatrice Rock near Marikaban Island as a survey location with five surveys. Depth figures vary by source and are not reconciled here.
