About This Dive Site
Capitancillo Island, Cebu
Capitancillo is a coral islet off Bogo in Cebu, also visited on diving day trips from Malapascua. French Kiss Divers describes a boat excursion with diving around the islet and its lighthouse. This guide covers the general Capitancillo diving area; it does not establish that every named nearby shoal or wall is the same dive.
Reef and wall diving
Thresher Shark Divers describes Capitancillo as a wall dive with soft corals, sea fans and small marine life. Its depth label is 30 metres and deeper, which indicates deeper terrain rather than a verified maximum or a recommended target depth.
Ask the operator which wall or reef section is planned, the intended depth and whether it matches your experience. Current strength, visibility and wildlife encounters can vary; this partial guide does not provide a current forecast or promise pelagic sightings.
French Kiss Divers and Thresher Shark Divers describe journeys from Malapascua taking roughly two hours. A departure from Bogo is a different trip, so confirm the actual boarding point and itinerary. Current fees, landing permission and trip availability remain unverified here.
The area figures in older descriptions have not been resolved against a matching boundary source. This guide therefore states no measured island size or marine-sanctuary area.
Island setting and recognised dive areas
Wikipedia's article on Capitancillo, captured on 8 October 2026, describes a small, uninhabited island northeast of Cebu Island in the Camotes Sea, 6.1 kilometres east of Barangay Odlot proper in mainland Bogo City. It says three areas are recognised dive sites: Ormoc Shoal, Núñez Shoal and the southwest wall of Capitancillo. It also says Polambato Port, Nailon Wharf, Marangog Cove and Odlot Hideaway serve as connecting points from mainland Bogo, with a trip of anywhere from fifteen to 45 minutes, and that there are no stores nor accommodation on the island. It gives the lighthouse tower as 83 feet (25 m) high, flashing three white lights every ten seconds.
Operator accounts and differing figures
Sea Explorers' Malapascua page, captured the same day, calls Capitancillo a protected marine sanctuary known for its beautiful table corals and impressive reef walls. It gives the journey from Malapascua as approximately 90 to 100 minutes, mentions schools of tropical fish along the walls, sea fans and sponges, and says Denise's pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish and nudibranchs may also be found. It adds that trips depend on weather, sea conditions and minimum participation. French Kiss Divers' page, captured the same day and written in French, gives 1h45 to 2h by boat from Malapascua, describes one dive, an island visit with a barbecue, then a second dive around the lighthouse, and mentions coral tables of more than two metres. The two travel times are not reconciled here. The island's size is also disputed: Wikipedia says about 600 hectares, while the French Kiss page says 6 hectares. This guide adopts neither figure.
A dated mainland listing and regional guides
The Divelog and Site entry for Capitancillo Wall, captured on 8 October 2026, reports normal visibility of 20 to 30 meters, a wall covered in huge gorgonians, sea fans, soft and hard corals, and often-sighted yellowfin tuna, snappers, big groupers, jacks and mackerels. It names a spot called Rendez-Vous, a deep wall down to 55+ meters, recommends an advanced diver, and lists December to April as the best time. The same entry is inconsistent: one paragraph gives a maximum depth of around 50 feet and another depth down to 50 meters, so no depth is adopted here. Visit Philippines (Travelindex) gives an average depth of 25-30 meters, recommends advanced divers because the current is usually roughly strong, and describes a wall on the south side. Philippine Beach Guide gives approximately 50ft and visibility of up to 30m. These figures differ and are not reconciled.
A dated visit
A TravelFeed post by iWanderEla, dated February 2018, records a stop on the islet on the way back to Cebu from Kalanggaman Island. The author says you can see corals even if you are on the boat, that the island has three dive sites, and that 25 pesos was paid to get on the island. That post is one visitor's recollection and sets no current fee.
