About This Dive Site

A short tunnel at Escarceo Point

Capt’n Gregg’s chart describes Hole in the Wall as a short tunnel through a small underwater hill at Escarceo Point. It notes that the feature is sometimes included on a route toward The Canyons. That connection does not mean the two listings are the same dive or that every outing visits both.

The operator gives a 10–20 m profile and describes conditions that can vary substantially with tide. These are planning references, not a current forecast or a recommended route.

The opening and surrounding reef

Action Divers places the swim-through at 12 m while listing a 15 m maximum for its site entry. The depth of the opening and the extent of a dive profile describe different things. Neither replaces Capt’n Gregg’s broader 10–20 m account with a newly measured site boundary.

Casalay’s Hole in the Wall section reports hydroids on the tunnel walls, soft corals on top of the hill and whip corals beyond it. It also reports occasional lionfish or scorpionfish in the passage. These details give context for the reef around the opening, rather than confirming its present clearance or condition.

Action lists snappers, drummers, sweetlips and batfish among reported schooling fish. It also describes Hole in the Wall as a possible starting point for The Canyons or part of a West Escarceo drift. Those route connections help explain why two outings sold under the same site name may differ. Establish whether your booking focuses on the hill and opening or includes an onward drift.

Look beyond the namesake opening

Marco Vincent’s named section describes basket sponges, small fans, feather stars and tubeworms on the rocky coral formation. It also distinguishes a small cave with a white gorgonian fan at 18 m from the namesake hole at 12 m. Keeping those reported features separate avoids treating every reference to an opening as the same place. Neither description establishes present access, clearance or suitability for entering either feature.

Choosing an appropriate outing

Ask whether the planned dive passes through the opening, stays outside it or continues elsewhere. Confirm the intended depth and the operator’s requirements for training and recent experience. A chart’s Open Water label does not by itself establish suitability for a confined passage or for an onward Canyons route.

Evidence limits

The opening’s present condition, dimensions and access arrangements are not independently verified here. Neither are current visibility, water temperature or wildlife encounters. The operator’s stylised map should not be used to derive navigation coordinates.

Casalay’s named account specifically warns of downcurrents during strong flooding conditions. This adds a vertical-current concern to the general tidal variability already noted; its description does not establish a safe tide window or replace a current local assessment.
