For divers seeking an adrenaline-fueled underwater adventure in Puerto Galera, Kilima Steps stands out as a signature dive site. Renowned for its dramatic topography and thrilling currents, this advanced drift dive promises an unforgettable experience. As one of the region's most celebrated dive sites, we recommend it highly for those with the appropriate certification and a love for fast-paced exploration.
Kilima Steps is aptly named for its unique underwater landscape, featuring a series of dramatic ridges and terraced formations that resemble giant steps descending into the blue. This multi-level dive site combines elements of a drift, wall, and reef dive, offering a diverse environment to explore. Divers will find these steps starting at depths around 8 meters and gradually dropping to a maximum depth of 30 meters. The structure is beautifully carpeted in a vibrant array of soft corals and sponges, alongside impressive hard corals like Big Barrel Sponges and Green Tree Corals, creating a rich and colorful habitat.
The diving at Kilima Steps is characterized by strong currents, making it an exhilarating, high-voltage drift dive. These currents typically flow in a south-to-north direction, and their strength can vary significantly depending on the moon phase and tidal movements. Due to these challenging conditions, Kilima Steps is classified as an advanced dive site, and an Advanced Open Water certification is required to explore it safely and fully. Divers must maintain excellent buoyancy control and be comfortable with fast drifts to navigate the site effectively without being carried off the main structure. The water temperature in Puerto Galera generally ranges from 25°C to 30°C throughout the year, with cooler temperatures typically occurring during the winter months from December to February.
Kilima Steps is a hotspot for marine biodiversity, offering encounters with both fascinating macro life and impressive pelagic species. The stepped canyons provide natural refuges from the ripping currents, serving as perfect vantage points for observing the bustling ecosystem. Divers can often spot large schools of pelagic fish sweeping through the flow, including the sleek Narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel and powerful Bluefin Trevally. Bigeye Barracuda are also common residents, cruising in the blue.
One of the most exciting draws to Kilima Steps is the consistent sighting of the majestic Pelagic Thresher Shark (Alopias pelagicus). These distinctive sharks, known for their exceptionally long caudal fins, are frequently observed during the colder months, particularly in February and March. They are often seen at shallower depths, around 17 to 18 meters, where they visit cleaning stations to have parasites removed by smaller reef fish – a crucial symbiotic relationship. When encountering these magnificent creatures, we advise divers to maintain calm movements, control buoyancy, and avoid chasing or using camera flashes directly at the sharks, to ensure their continued presence at this special site.
Beyond the pelagics, the vibrant coral gardens teem with a variety of reef inhabitants. Divers will find charming Starry Pufferfish, often seen meticulously navigating the reef. The crevices and coral formations are home to a diverse array of macro critters, including octopi, cuttlefish, moray eels, and the elusive pygmy seahorses, which cling to large fan corals. Other commonly spotted reef fish include red-toothed triggerfish, anthias, and the popular Palette Surgeonfish (often recognized as 'Dory'). Occasionally, divers may also encounter banded sea snakes, turtles, and various nudibranch species.
Kilima Steps offers an electrifying and unforgettable diving experience for thrill-seeking divers. While the strong currents pose a significant hazard, they are also what make this dive so dynamic and rich in marine life, bringing nutrient-rich waters to the reef. We recommend that divers always go in small groups with an experienced instructor or guide who is familiar with the site's variable conditions. Puerto Galera itself is a year-round diving destination, with generally drier weather and calmer seas from November to May, though the wet season from June to October can also offer excellent visibility and fewer crowds. Kilima Steps truly embodies the best of Puerto Galera's diving, combining dramatic topography with abundant pelagic and reef life in a fast-paced, exhilarating drift.
