About This Dive Site

A stepped reef landscape

Capt’n Gregg’s chart describes Kilima Steps as stepped reef terrain. Scandi Divers’ September 2020 article also highlights the stepped topography. This shared terrain description is more useful for choosing a dive than treating a historical wildlife list as a promise.

Capt’n Gregg’s gives a 5–20 m profile and an Open Water label. Those details describe that operator’s offering; they do not establish a surveyed site boundary or suitability for every diver in every condition.

Planning the route

Ask which steps the dive will visit, the depth intended for the group and how current conditions affect the route. Confirm entry, pickup and experience requirements directly with the operator.

Historical wildlife reports

The 2020 Scandi article mentions thresher sharks at Kilima Steps. That is a dated operator report, not evidence of current presence, reliable encounters or a scheduled shark dive. Current sightings, visibility, temperature and seasonal patterns remain unverified. The available illustrative chart provides no navigation coordinates.

Smaller subjects around the reef steps

Capt'n Gregg's Kilima Steps entry lists table coral, blue tangs, morays and nudibranchs. These public-source highlights add reef and macro subjects to the older thresher-shark account above. They are not a current sighting log and do not establish how often any of these animals can be seen.

A deeper route described by a visiting diver

Michael McFadyen’s 2023 Kilima account describes an outing reaching approximately 29–30 m, deeper than the chart profile above. His return passed ledges and large coral outcrops before finishing in shallower water. The name Kilima therefore does not, by itself, tell a visitor which depth or route an operator intends. Ask specifically whether the proposal is a shallow stepped-reef outing or a deeper excursion, and discuss the experience needed for that actual plan.

Why a shark report is not an encounter promise

McFadyen reports seeing a distant thresher shark and then a closer shark, while explicitly allowing that it might have been the same animal. On another dive six days later, he saw no threshers. The second outing also had a much stronger northward current and began farther south. These contrasting visits are more informative than treating one successful sighting as a reliable attraction.

The report notes different temperatures on the two dives, but it does not establish a temperature threshold that predicts sharks. Nor does it establish a dependable tide, season or time of day for encounters. A booking should be based on an appropriate dive plan even if no shark appears.

Reef interests beyond the shark search

During the shallower portions, McFadyen recorded nudibranchs, flatworms, shrimps and a banded sea snake. These observations broaden the reported interests beyond large animals. His tentative identification of a possible triggerfish nest remains uncertain; it is not evidence that a specific nesting area will be occupied during another visit.
