Mainit Point

About This Dive Site
The peninsula’s southern point
The Asri places Mainit Point at the southern end of the Calumpang Peninsula. Eagle Point Resort describes rocky terrain and warns of strong currents, although its summary also characterizes the current as slight.
Resolve conditions locally
That inconsistent account cannot establish a dependable current category or an easy route. The intended section, conditions and suitability need confirmation with the operator. A listed maximum depth is not a recommendation to descend to it.
Partial wildlife information
Reported animal possibilities are not recent observations or guaranteed encounters. Site-specific sighting records and a clearly mapped route would improve this guide; regional marine-life lists cannot substitute for them.
What operators say about the point
Eagle Point Resort's dive-site page, in a Wayback Machine snapshot of 13 April 2026, places Mainit Point at the southernmost point of the Calumpang Peninsula, known as Cazador Point on the charts, about 30 minutes by boat south from its pier. It gives an average depth of 50 feet and a maximum of 100 feet, describes a cave at 23 feet in which whitetip reef sharks have been seen resting and boulders festooned with soft corals, anemones, crinoids, Linckia sea stars and nudibranchs, and says divers may have to shelter behind the rocks to photograph because of the fierce currents. Blue Ribbon Divers' page for the site it calls Mainit Corner, published October 2025, agrees that the geographical name is Cazador Point and says the site came to be known as Mainit for the small hot spring on the shore. It describes a roughly triangular point with the apex to the south, an entry from the east in the Habagat season and from the west in the Amihan season, a slope running to roughly 40 m before plunging past 70 m, and three car-sized rocky mounds at about 30 m that break the current. It warns of very strong currents and down-currents near the apex and says the site is not for the novice diver.
Dive The World's Anilao page, retrieved October 2026, calls it a current-swept, boulder-strewn slope fed by the current through the Maricaban Strait and mentions a cave at about 7 to 8 m. ScubaTech Philippines gives 5 to 30 m with occasional strong current, Bambu Villa's table gives 15 m average and 30 m maximum, and Aqua-Venture's table in a January 2026 snapshot lists 30 m with strong current. These are operator table values, not a surveyed range.
Dated diver reports
In a ScubaBoard thread of 21 September 2010, one poster suggested trying Mainit Point in the morning during full moon for a chance to see sharks, and another wrote that when the current is running the site usually has a few blacktip sharks circling at the edge of visibility but that there is not much to see when the current is not flowing. A ScubaBoard report of 1 July 2014 called it a perfect drift, and Mike Jackson's blog post of 1 May 2012 recalled that it could be quite challenging when the tide was running. Blue Ribbon Divers' 2025 page says the blacktip sharks seen there are getting increasingly rare. None of these is a current observation, and shark encounters are not promised.
Names and neighbouring sites
Mainit is a family of names. The Anilao Critters and Resorts 2018 map lists Mainit Point separately from Mainit (Secret Bay), Mainit (Bubbles) and Mainit (School); Manila Scuba Diving Adventure's list, in a snapshot of 28 September 2026, separates Mainit Point from Mainit Bubbles; REEF's zone list records a survey site named Mainit Corner / Mainit West; and Michael McFadyen's October 2025 log uses Mainit Corner, West, School and Bubbles. Those entries are not used here for this site's conditions. One disagreement is recorded, not resolved: the Wetpixel wiki labels Mainit Point/Corner as classic muck diving on a sandy bottom, while every other source above describes a current-swept boulder reef.
