About This Dive Site

Monad Shoal, Malapascua

Monad Shoal is a submerged plateau associated with Malapascua diving and the history of thresher-shark observation. It remains a distinct dive destination, but an older account of a thresher trip to Monad may not describe the trip an operator offers today. MBI Dive Center's September 2026 comparison and Thresher Shark Divers' current guide place their regular thresher trips at Kimud Shoal.

History and today's trip are different evidence

The IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group's 2024 factsheet draws on dated research documenting pelagic-thresher cleaning interactions at Monad. That research explains the shoal's significance. It does not establish a current encounter rate. Thresher Shark Divers reports that thresher sightings at Monad have become uncommon following the shift towards Kimud. Treat historical observations and present operator reports as different kinds of information when choosing a trip.

MBI reports occasional tiger-shark encounters at Monad. That is an operator report, not a promise or a verified numerical likelihood. This guide does not establish why shark activity has changed. In particular, it does not present predator displacement as a proven explanation.

Choose the shoal deliberately

Ask which shoal is included when comparing trips advertised for sharks. A Monad booking should not be assumed to include Kimud, or the reverse. For a thresher-focused visit, compare the operator's present itinerary with its older photographs and descriptions; historical sightings at Monad do not establish today's destination.

Clarify the route before booking

Published accounts describe different plateau and cleaning-area depths. This partial guide does not turn those numbers into a measured average or a universal dive limit. MBI describes its Monad dive as deeper than its Kimud offering and recommends advanced experience. A recommendation from one operator does not establish every operator's admission policy. Ask for the intended route, planned depth, supervision and experience requirements for the trip you would join.

Sea Explorers describes possible devil-ray and eagle-ray encounters at Monad. Thresher Shark Divers also mentions hammerheads, without identifying a species in its Monad section. These are operator reports of possible encounters, not confirmed identifications of reef manta rays, a particular eagle-ray species or scalloped hammerheads. Species-level identities, encounter frequency and month-by-month patterns for these reports remain unverified. Generic wildlife descriptions should not be read as a promise that a particular species will appear on your dive.

What this partial guide leaves open

Current strength, visibility, temperature and seasonal suitability remain unverified here. An unknown value is not a claim that conditions are benign. Use the operator's current briefing for the day's plan.

The 2024 IUCN factsheet describes sharks circling at cleaning stations while cleaner wrasses inspect them. Its cited Monad observations date from 2005–2009 and 2018. This explains the cleaning-station terminology in older dive accounts; it does not establish current shark attendance or guarantee the same behaviour during a visit.

Hazards & Safety

Be aware of these potential hazards at this dive site

Current

Severity: Not yet documented

Current conditions and severity have not been verified. The legacy transverse-current and drop-off statement is not confirmed by the reviewed Monad-specific sources. Ask the operator for a current conditions briefing.

Decompression obligation

Severity: Not yet documented

Legacy decompression-obligation report unverified. No reviewed dive profile establishes an obligation for this site. This entry is not a dive plan or a verified severity assessment.

Depth

Severity: Not yet documented

Legacy depth hazard report unverified. Published cleaning-area and plateau depths describe different routes; this record does not establish a site-wide depth range or severity rating. Confirm the planned route and depth with your operator.
