Sunken Cemetery

About This Dive Site
Sunken Cemetery, Catarman
Sunken Cemetery is a coastal heritage landmark and dive destination in Catarman, Camiguin. The provincial government's tourism page identifies the large cross and connects the submerged cemetery with Mount Vulcan's eruptions in the 1870s. Blue Season Camiguin lists it among the sites it offers, describing underwater remnants with coral and other marine growth.
Underwater heritage and reef life
Blue Season describes scattered stone features and remnants of the old cemetery among corals and sponges. Its site account also reports reef fish, moray eels and nudibranchs. These are operator descriptions, not an archaeological inventory or a guarantee of what will be visible during a particular visit. The visible cross is a landmark; it does not by itself identify a dive entry, a surveyed underwater boundary or the location of every historical feature.
Arrange the activity you want
A visit to the coastal landmark and a guided scuba dive are different plans. Confirm with the operator whether your booking includes an underwater visit, the meeting point, transport, equipment and any local arrangements. Blue Season publishes a 5–20 m dive profile, but that is its advertised site description rather than a measured average or a guaranteed route on the day.
Conditions and suitability
The operator describes a slightly silty seabed and generally gentle conditions. Treat that as context, not a forecast. Ask about current visibility, entry and exit arrangements, and whether the proposed profile fits your training and recent experience. Avoid disturbing the seabed or handling historical remains, and follow the local briefing about areas that may be visited.
What remains unverified
This partial guide does not establish site-wide depth limits, an average depth, current fees, daily access or a universal certification requirement. The provincial tourism account provides heritage context rather than dive clearance. Recent observations can improve the description if they identify the actual route and date without turning one visit into a permanent condition claim.
A firsthand underwater account
Lakwatsero's named Sunken Cemetery dive report adds a useful distinction between the landmark's history and what a visitor actually recognized underwater. The author reports seeing two original cross markers, but did not identify tombs during that dive. Large table corals, brain corals and sponges were among the observed features. That account does not establish that graves are absent, nor identify every stone feature as a burial structure. It describes one diver's observations, separately from the report's Old Vulcan and White Island dives. Its favorable visibility and current describe that outing rather than present conditions; its account of climbing the surface cross is not a current access recommendation.
