Black Forest (Balicasag Island)

About This Dive Site
A steep reef slope
Black Forest is a Balicasag slope dive named in both Philippine Fun Divers and Seaquest’s site descriptions. The black-coral habitat and the ordinary dive route are not the same depth measurement. Shallow reef scenery should not be confused with a promise to reach the deeper coral.
Habitat depth is not the route maximum
Philippine Fun Divers lists an 8–40 m dive range and describes black coral at 35–45 m. Seaquest describes black coral starting at 25 m but mostly below 40 m; its 20–40 m range is explicitly labelled for night diving. These statements do not establish a universal maximum or justify an itinerary to those depths.
Confirm the intended outing
Ask which part of the slope the trip will visit, whether the description concerns a day or night dive, and how current changes the route. Wildlife descriptions in the sources are operator accounts, not a forecast or an encounter guarantee. The earlier 25 m average remains unverified.

Reef scenery above the black coral
Philippine Fun Divers describes numerous coral heads in the shallower part of Black Forest and a sandy bottom on its usual approach. Seaquest describes coral bommies along a steep slope. This gives the site a reef landscape to explore even when the deeper black-coral habitat is outside the agreed dive plan. The Fun Divers table identifies about 15 m as its preferred viewing depth; that is the operator’s recommendation, separate from both its published route range and the depth of the name-bearing coral.
The Fun Divers account lists anthias, groupers, scorpionfish, squirrelfish, parrotfish, wrasses, damselfish and anemonefish. Seaquest adds surgeonfish and small subjects along the slope, while describing barracuda and bigeye trevally farther out. These lists distinguish looking closely around coral heads from watching the surrounding water for schooling fish. They are general operator reports, without dated encounter records; neither the presence nor the absence of a particular fish defines the outing.
How the operator describes its trip
Fun Divers describes an outing that begins by swimming against the current over sand and later becomes a drift as conditions change. That is an example of its route, not a fixed sequence to follow independently. Its table gives an approximate 27-minute banca journey from Alona Beach, about 10 km away. The same source quotes 15–30 m visibility, while Seaquest quotes 15–40 m. Use those figures to understand the operators’ advertised setting, not to choose a travel connection or predict underwater conditions on a particular day.
