Dive Site Features

• Topography: Divers will explore a spectacular vertical wall that plunges dramatically, featuring numerous overhangs, ledges, and small caves. These geological formations provide excellent shelter for a variety of marine life. The reef top begins shallow, around 3-5 meters, before dropping steeply.
• Depth: With a typical dive profile ranging from 10 to 35 meters, and the wall extending beyond 40 meters, Cathedral offers an exhilarating deep dive experience. We recommend careful depth management due to the significant drop-off.
• Current: Expect variable currents at Cathedral, which can range from gentle to brisk, making it an excellent site for a thrilling drift dive.
• Water Temperature: The waters around Balicasag Island are comfortably warm, with temperatures generally ranging between 28°C and 30°C.
• Visibility: Visibility here is often excellent, frequently exceeding 20-30 meters, providing crystal-clear views of the vibrant underwater landscape.
• Certification: Due to its depth, variable currents, and the presence of overhead environments, an Advanced Open Water certification is required for diving Cathedral.
• Hazards: Divers should be mindful of the potentially strong currents, the significant depth, the overhead environment within the caverns, and occasional boat traffic in the area.

Marine Life

Cathedral is teeming with diverse marine life, offering encounters with both reef inhabitants and pelagic species:

• Pelagic Action: Keep an eye out into the blue where you can often encounter impressive schools of Great Barracuda and Bigeye Trevally, sometimes forming mesmerizing "tornadoes" of fish. We may also spot Spanish mackerel swimming in large schools.
• Reef Dwellers: Along the wall, divers will find a rich array of reef fish. Look into the crevices and under ledges for well-camouflaged Giant Moray eels, frogfish, lionfish, and lobsters.
• Turtles and Rays: Graceful Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles are frequent visitors, often seen gliding past or resting on the reef ledges. If you're lucky, you might also spot the majestic Spotted Eagle Ray.
• Other Species: Divers can also find Trumpetfish, octopus, and occasionally, white tip reef sharks resting in small caves. The wall itself is adorned with vibrant coral formations, large gorgonian sea fans, and yellow bucket sponges, creating a colorful backdrop for macro life.
