This dive site is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and dramatic underwater topography, making it a must-visit for divers exploring the Bohol region.

Dive Site Features

As one of Balicasag's most acclaimed dive sites, Rico's Wall offers a captivating blend of wall, drift, reef, coral garden, and drop-off diving. Divers will begin on a vibrant coral garden plateau, typically found between 5 to 12 meters. This shallower reef top is teeming with life and provides an excellent area for Open Water certified divers to explore. Beyond this plateau, the site transforms into a sheer vertical wall, plunging dramatically to depths of 40 to 50 meters, and even beyond for technical divers. The wall itself is adorned with spectacular hard and soft corals, including huge gorgonian sea fans, sponges, and crinoids, creating a breathtaking backdrop for your underwater adventure.

Marine Life Encounters

The marine life density at Rico's Wall is truly exceptional. Divers can expect frequent encounters with both Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), often seen grazing on the seagrass or gliding gracefully along the reef. Looking out into the blue, you can often witness impressive schools of Bigeye Trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) forming mesmerizing "tornadoes," alongside barracudas, fusiliers, snappers, and other pelagic species.

For those with a keen eye for macro life, Rico's Wall is a critter hunter's paradise. We regularly find fascinating species such as the elusive Giant Frogfish (Antennarius commerson), a wide array of colorful Nudibranchs (Nudibranchia spp.), and the intricately camouflaged Leaf Scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus). Keep an eye out for the striking Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) tucked into ledges, and the impressive Giant Moray (Gymnothorax javanicus) peering from crevices. The wall also hosts soldierfish, squirrelfish, and anemones with resident clownfish.

Diving Conditions and Certification

Rico's Wall is classified as an intermediate dive site. While Open Water certification is required and sufficient for exploring the shallower reef shelf, we recommend an Advanced Open Water certification for those wishing to explore the deeper sections of the wall or when currents are stronger.

Currents at this dive site are variable, ranging from mild to brisk, and can sometimes be strong, making it an ideal location for drift diving. Good buoyancy control is essential here, especially when navigating the dramatic drop-offs and numerous overhangs and small caverns that punctuate the wall. Water temperatures are consistently warm, typically ranging from 26°C to 30°C year-round, making a 3mm wetsuit comfortable for most divers.

Potential Hazards

Divers should be mindful of the variable currents and the significant depth of the wall. As with any vibrant reef, dangerous marine life such as lionfish and scorpionfish are present, so maintaining a respectful distance is advised. Boat traffic in the area also necessitates vigilance, especially during ascent and safety stops. Precision buoyancy control is crucial to avoid inadvertently dropping too deep or coming into contact with the delicate coral formations.
