About This Dive Site
A Puerto Galera reef with historical survey records
REEF’s survey database identifies Fantasea Reef within Puerto Galera, Mindoro. The report contains historical fish surveys, providing evidence of a named Philippine site rather than the unrelated Florida wreck sometimes called Fantasea.
Sand and patch reef in a collection record
A published taxonomic treatment records a specimen of the marine worm Chloeia bemisae collected at Fantasea Reef in April 2015. The collection habitat was a gentle sandy slope with patches of reef at 3–7 m. That describes a historical sampling location, not the full dive-site depth range or its present condition.
Planning a visit
Confirm the intended reef section, access, depth and experience requirements with a local operator. Historical observations do not guarantee sightings today. Current conditions, seasonal reliability and the correspondence between operator routes and the survey locality remain unverified.
A deeper visitor route with the same local name
Michael McFadyen’s account of his 2023 Sabang trip describes a Fantasea outing north of the beach. His route began around 18 m and reached approximately 23 m before returning through shallower water. He encountered sand, scattered coral pieces and coral outcrops, including conspicuous cone-shaped formations that he estimated at about a metre high. These observations add a visitor’s view of the named reef; they do not establish that his route coincides with the exact 2015 specimen-collection location.
The deeper dive profile and the shallow scientific sampling record therefore describe different kinds of evidence. A collection made at 3–7 m is not proof that every Fantasea outing stays shallow, while one visitor’s deeper route is not a new minimum depth. Ask which section the operator intends before choosing the dive.
Natural and artificial features
Along the route, McFadyen describes small metal boats, mooring blocks and ropes among the coral outcrops. He interpreted the boats as possible artificial reefs, but the account does not establish why they were placed there or who owns them. Those structures are historical habitat observations rather than verified descent lines or evidence that anything is safe to enter.
The visit produced sightings of nudibranchs, orangutan crabs, banded sea snakes, a turtle and mantis shrimps. A photographed weedy scorpionfish was identified as Rhinopias frondosa. That individual observation does not establish a resident animal, a reliable search location or a current encounter rate.
Conditions belong to the visit
The diver describes a strong current during the outing and a gradual return toward shallow water. His experience is a reason to discuss the actual route and pickup arrangement, rather than assuming that sand and patch reef necessarily mean calm conditions. No tide schedule or seasonal prediction follows from this single account.
