Pescador Island (The Cathedral)

About This Dive Site
Pescador Island: The Cathedral
This partial guide describes the Cathedral feature at Pescador Island near Moalboal. Blue Abyss describes a vertical chimney among the island's walls, overhangs and coral habitat. Turtle Bay places the Cathedral on the western side and describes sunlight entering through openings.
A feature within a larger reef
The operators describe different openings and routes. Their figures do not establish one universally applicable entry depth, exit depth or whole-site maximum. The island's open-water reef and the Cathedral's overhead section must not be treated as interchangeable experiences.
Confirm the actual itinerary
Ask whether the planned dive observes the feature from outside or enters an overhead section, and confirm the route, conditions and operator requirements before booking. This guide does not establish that entering the Cathedral is appropriate for your training or experience.
Evidence limits
Current access arrangements, measured average depth and a universal certification requirement remain unverified here. Wildlife descriptions in the sources are observations and promotional accounts, not guaranteed encounters. Further locally verified information can improve this partial guide.
Read the Cathedral separately from the island walls
Blue Abyss’s Pescador Island section calls the Cathedral a vertical chimney and gives openings around 18 and 30 metres in its route description. Those references are not a surveyed floor-and-ceiling pair or a recommended passage for every diver. The same section describes the surrounding wall with black corals, sea fans, sponges and feather stars, and mentions a coral garden on the reef shelf. Blue Abyss also distinguishes steep drop-offs, overhangs and crevices from the shelf’s coral gardens. Those surroundings are a separate photographic subject from the chimney interior; an island outing need not be described solely in terms of the overhead feature. Its reports of snappers, anthias, scorpionfish and frogfish concern Pescador’s broader reef habitat. They should not be reassigned specifically to the Cathedral interior or confused with the different animals listed under the operator’s separate House Reef heading.
Simon Rogerson’s SCUBA feature describes colourful soft corals on Pescador’s walls and a large cavern with four openings. He separately recalls a shallow coral garden damaged by a typhoon and reports developing corals during his visit. This contrast between the walls and shallows is useful historical context, not a present reef-health survey. The excerpt does not establish the visit date or identify the storm by name. Its cavern description and photograph do not document a navigable route, clearance dimensions or permission to enter.
Marine-park context
The Coastal Resource Management Project’s 2004 directory records Pescador Island’s declaration as a marine park within Moalboal’s coastal-management history. It lists the island separately from the mainland sanctuaries at Tongo, Saavedra and Basdiot. That historical designation does not confirm current fees, closures or conditions for entering the Cathedral.
