Three canyons, described by local operators
Capt’n Gregg’s chart describes The Canyons as an advanced drift dive. Scandi Divers’ September 2020 account also describes three canyons. The two accounts support the terrain description, but do not provide a forecast for a particular dive.
Depth needs careful interpretation: Scandi refers to the deepest canyon at 27 m, while Capt’n Gregg’s gives a 25–35 m dive profile. These statements may describe different parts of a route. Neither is treated as proof of a surveyed site-wide boundary, and the old listing’s 18–32 m range remains unverified.
Terrain and reported marine life
Action Divers describes a wall approach followed by three canyons, with an embedded anchor beyond the third. The anchor is a reported landmark, not a navigation instruction or an independently checked position. Action’s 32 m maximum belongs to its own listing and does not resolve the differently scoped depths above.
Scandi’s dated account describes soft corals in pink, purple and orange, sea fans and fish moving around the canyon terrain. Action reports schools of drummers, snappers, sweetlips, batfish, emperors and trevally. These operator reports explain the site’s combination of reef scenery and schooling-fish interest; they are not encounter-frequency data.
The descriptions also make current part of the experience. Action describes potential shelter within the second canyon, but this is not an assurance that shelter will be available or reachable on a given dive. Discuss the whole proposed route with the guide rather than judging the outing only by a photograph of a canyon or one published depth.
Sponges, fans and feeding fish
Marco Vincent’s named Canyons account highlights large barrel sponges and bent sea fans among the coral blocks. It also describes fusiliers and mackerel being pursued by jacks and barracuda. That account adds a view of fish activity around the terrain, alongside the better-known schools sheltering near the canyons. It is an operator description, not a measured food-web study or a prediction that a particular dive will encounter hunting fish.
Choosing an outing
Ask the dive team about the route, planned depth, expected current and the experience required for the proposed dive. Entry, ascent and pickup arrangements belong in a current local briefing. This guide does not turn an operator’s tide preference into instructions for timing your dive.
What remains uncertain
The historical wildlife descriptions are not present-day sighting promises. Visibility, temperature, a universal certification prerequisite and reliable seasonal conditions have not been established. The existing map position has not been newly verified or changed.
Casalay’s named Canyons description distinguishes sandy floors inside the reef depressions from the surrounding slopes. That substrate detail helps explain the contrast between the canyon interiors and their coral-covered edges; it does not make the depressions guaranteed current shelters.
