A sloping reef with several route profiles
Action Divers describes West Escarceo as a long reef slope, beginning around 5 m and reaching a listed maximum of 30 m. Capt’n Gregg’s describes a shallower 5–25 m profile toward Hole in the Wall or The Canyons.
These are attributed operator routes, not a single surveyed boundary. An onward destination should not be assumed to be part of every West Escarceo dive.
Choose the outing with the operator
Ask which reef section and endpoint are planned, the intended depth, and how current affects the route and pickup. The sources discuss drift diving and different experience labels; a general novice label does not establish suitability for every current or onward route.
Evidence and conditions
The structured depth references follow Action Divers and remain labelled as single-source information. Confirm the experience needed for the selected route rather than relying on a general skill label. Current visibility, temperature, seasonal reliability and wildlife encounter frequencies are not established by these descriptions. This guide gives no tide schedule or cave-entry advice.
Subjects named in the reef account
Action Divers mentions an electric clam among West Escarceo's overhangs and small caves, and reports trevally, sweetlips and snappers along the reef. These are descriptive wildlife interests, not a tide-based route recommendation or permission to enter an overhead space. The account does not establish present sightings or predictable encounter rates.
A visitor’s route west of the headland
Michael McFadyen’s account from his 2023 Sabang trip places his West Escarceo outing in a small bay west of the lighthouse headland. He describes starting in approximately 9 m, moving into deeper water and then travelling with the current around 22–24 m. His return reached shallower coral. These measurements belong to one outing; they do not replace the different operator profiles above.
His account describes sand and scattered coral outcrops along the deeper portion, with more coral toward the shallow finish. For visitors comparing nearby dives, that is a more specific expectation than imagining a continuous wall of coral throughout the route. Confirm whether the operator intends this bay and slope or a continuation toward another named site.
Reported small-animal interests
The visitor recorded an orangutan crab, a small banded sea snake, anemonefish and nudibranchs. He also found shrimps among featherstars. These observations suggest subjects for a close-looking reef outing, while leaving their present whereabouts and encounter frequency unresolved. A school of small silver fish in deeper water was not identified, so it is not described here as a particular species.
McFadyen preferred other nearby dives, a personal judgment rather than a measured ranking of reef condition. His report supports discussing the terrain and the group’s interests with the operator; it does not establish that West Escarceo is unsuitable or that another site will necessarily be better on the day.
