For divers seeking an extraordinary adventure, Cathedral Cave on the southern tip of Coron Island offers a truly unique and demanding dive site. This submerged cavern, carved into the dramatic limestone foundations of the island, promises an unforgettable experience for those with the appropriate certifications and a spirit for exploration.
The journey into Cathedral Cave begins with an entry tunnel found at approximately 6 to 8 meters depth, running laterally for about 10 meters. Divers will find this natural doorway a captivating start to what lies beyond. As we navigate this initial passage, we emerge into an immense subterranean dome, a breathtaking chamber that is half-filled with clear seawater and half with breathable air.
Inside this natural cathedral, the main diving depth ranges from 12 to 15 meters on a sandy bottom. A massive tree trunk, which crashed through the roof decades ago, rests dramatically on a central sand dune, adding to the cave's mystique. At midday, a single, brilliant shaft of sunlight often pierces a collapsed hole in the roof, cutting through the darkness and illuminating the stalactites overhead with an ethereal glow. Surfacing within the air pocket allows for a moment of awe, as your exhalations echo off the cavern walls, creating a serene and almost reverent atmosphere.
While the primary draw of Cathedral Cave is its stunning geological formations, observant divers can still encounter fascinating marine life. We often spot Indo-Pacific Spiny Lobsters (Panulirus spp.) peering from crevices within the entrance tunnel and inside the cave itself. Look closely, and you might also find assorted Cardinalfish (Apogonidae spp.) and Soldierfish (Myripristis sp.) sheltering in the darker corners. Outside the cave, the adjacent reef slope offers a vibrant contrast, teeming with colorful reef fish, cowrie shells, and various small nudibranchs for macro enthusiasts.
Cathedral Cave is classified as an advanced dive site due to its overhead environment and variable conditions. We recommend this dive for those holding an Advanced Open Water certification and a Cavern Specialty certification. Currents can be variable, and surge is a significant hazard, particularly near the entrance. Therefore, this dive site can only be attempted in calm weather with slight waves; attempting entry during large waves and strong surge would be physically dangerous.
The water temperature in Coron generally hovers around 26°C to 28°C during the dry season, which is considered the best time to dive, typically from November to May. Visibility inside the cave can be excellent, often reaching 20 to 30 meters on calm days. While there can be a mild thermocline or halocline effect due to freshwater seepage, it is not as extreme as other local sites.
We advise divers to maintain excellent buoyancy control and comfort in overhead environments. Always dive with a certified instructor or guide and bring a dive light to fully appreciate the cave's details.
