Lake

Prepare for an extraordinary adventure to Barracuda Lake, locally known as Luluyuan Lake, a truly unique dive site nestled within the dramatic limestone cliffs of Coron. The journey itself is part of the experience, requiring a boat ride to Coron Island followed by a hike over a ridge of jagged limestone rocks, often with your full scuba gear. While challenging, this trek builds anticipation for the otherworldly experience that awaits beneath the surface.
Barracuda Lake is renowned not for vast coral gardens, but for its captivating geological features and remarkable thermoclines and haloclines. Descending into the lake, divers will first encounter freshwater, with a comfortable surface water temperature of approximately 28°C.
Around 4 meters, we pass through a halocline, where the water subtly shifts from fresh to brackish, then to saltwater. The most striking phenomenon occurs at approximately 14 meters, where divers will experience a dramatic thermocline. Here, the water temperature rapidly increases from 28°C to a warm 38°C, feeling akin to slipping into a natural hot spring. This intense geothermal heating from subterranean vents creates a dense, warm saltwater layer that can extend down to around 26 to 32 meters. Passing through these layers, divers will often observe shimmering, vision-distorting effects, as if entering another dimension.
Below this warm layer, the water temperature gradually cools again to around 28°C as you approach the deeper sections. The underwater landscape is a surreal, lunar-like environment, characterized by towering limestone walls that plunge into the depths. At the maximum depth, divers will find a soft, silty bottom, often described as "jelly-like" or "silky," offering a unique sensation of weightlessness.
Barracuda Lake offers a truly unparalleled diving experience, making it a must-visit for those seeking geological wonders and sensory exploration rather than abundant marine biodiversity. It is a dive that promises to transport you to another world.
