Embark on a dive at White Slave, a site deeply intertwined with Bonaire's poignant history, offering a unique blend of cultural reflection and vibrant underwater exploration. As you prepare for your dive, you will find ten small white huts, once shelters for enslaved salt workers, marking the entry point, with the guiding white obelisk for salt ships still standing watch. This thoughtful, quieter dive rewards respect both above and below the waterline.

• Difficulty: Intermediate
• Depth: Divers will explore depths typically ranging from 6 m to 30 m, with the reef sloping down to a maximum depth of 40 m for those with appropriate certification and experience.
• Current: The current at White Slave is variable; we advise divers to be prepared for potential stronger currents, especially given its prominent point location on the southwest coast. Experience with an SMB (Surface Marker Buoy) is highly recommended.
• Water Temperature: The inviting water temperature typically ranges from 26°C to 29°C year-round, ensuring comfortable diving conditions.
• Certification: An Open Water Diver certification is required, but an Advanced Open Water certification is recommended due to the potential for variable currents and deeper sections of the reef.
• Site Types: This dive site offers both stunning reef formations and convenient shore access.
• Hazards: Divers should be mindful of variable currents and potential surge, particularly during entry and exit over loose coral rubble, which requires careful footing.

Underwater Exploration

Your underwater journey at White Slave begins over a sandy shelf, where you can often spot Brown Garden Eels swaying gently from the substrate. This area is also a hunting ground for majestic Spotted Eagle Rays and Southern Stingrays, gracefully gliding across the bottom.

A slightly longer-than-usual swim out from shore will lead you to the main event: a vibrant, sloping reef. Here, divers will find a dense tapestry of sponges and soft corals, creating a lush and thriving ecosystem. The northern stretch of this reef is often noted for being particularly rich and verdant.

As you navigate the reef, keep an eye out for a diverse array of marine life. You can encounter colorful Stoplight Parrotfish, busy Ocean Surgeonfish, and the well-camouflaged Spotted Scorpionfish. Lucky divers may also spot graceful Green Sea Turtles foraging among the corals. While beautiful, we also remind divers to be aware of the invasive Red Lionfish, which can sometimes be found here.
