About This Dive Site
Light and overhangs on a Balicasag wall
Both reviewed operators describe Cathedral as a wall with overhangs and ledges, with sunlight contributing to its name. The feature description does not imply that a cave route is included or suitable for every diver.
The Royal Garden naming question
A 2019 Philippine PPP Center statement calls one Balicasag site Cathedral or Royal Garden. Diveity currently has a separate Royal Garden listing. Their precise relationship remains unresolved here: neither record has been merged, and this page should not be used to assume two independently verified sites when arranging a trip.
Published ranges
Philippine Fun Divers lists 3–45 m, while Seaquest lists 10–45 m. Both describe a dive range; the differing starts need route context. Neither is a survey proving the full wall’s extent. The old 22 m average is not substantiated. Confirm the name, route and planned depth with the operator.
Sources and remaining gaps
Philippine Fun Divers; Seaquest Dive Center; Philippine PPP Center (2019). This is a partial, source-attributed guide. It has not been verified by a local diver. Water temperature, seasonal conditions and a universal certification requirement are not established by this review.
What gives the wall its character
Philippine Fun Divers describes yellow bucket sponges within the overhangs and large sea fans on the wall. The gaps, ledges and shaded recesses create the setting for the light effect, which its account specifically associates with sunny days. A visit under different light may therefore look different from the operator’s description. These features make the wall itself a subject of interest; the name should not be read as evidence of an enclosed cathedral-sized chamber or a promised cave excursion.
The Fun Divers account separates fish reported near the wall from those in the surrounding water. It lists golden sergeant fish, midnight snappers, pyramid butterflyfish and one-spot snappers close to the face, with bigmouth mackerel farther out. Its shallower-water list includes barracuda, anglerfish and snub-nosed drummers. Seaquest also describes frogfish around the wall. Several passages in the two accounts are very similar, so their overlap is not treated here as independent confirmation of present-day sightings.
Compare the wall outing with a shallow visit
Fun Divers rates approximately 20 m as the most interesting depth on its route and separately advertises snorkeling at the site. Those are different activities, not evidence that snorkelers see every wall feature described for divers. The operator lists an approximate 29-minute banca transfer from Alona Beach, about 10.5 km away, and 15–25 m visibility; Seaquest lists 15–40 m visibility. None of these figures is a current-day measurement. When booking, distinguish the wall itinerary from any shallow-water option, particularly while the Cathedral and Royal Garden naming relationship remains unresolved.
