We will find ourselves exploring a well-preserved World War II-era Japanese patrol boat, transformed into a vibrant home for countless marine species. The Wreck Itself

This historic Japanese patrol boat rests on the sandy bottom at an approximate depth of 18 meters. Its name, the Cross Wreck, originates from a Christian cross visible on the hill above the dive site, marking the landing spot of the first Christian missionaries to the region. Over the decades, the wreck has become a magnificent artificial reef, with its hull now cloaked in a rich tapestry of encrusting soft corals and sponges. Divers with appropriate training may even find opportunities for limited penetration into areas such as the communications room, engine room, and front holds, where features like the switchboard and ammunition can still be observed.

Marine Life Encounters

The Cross Wreck is a macro photographer's delight and a sanctuary for a diverse array of marine life. As we explore the structure, we can expect to encounter numerous species seeking shelter and sustenance. Divers will find schools of Glassfish / Sweepers (Parapriacanthus sp.) swirling within the wreck's interior, while the striking Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) and the camouflaged Bearded Scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis barbata) lurk in crevices. Keep a keen eye out for the distinctive Longfin Batfish (Platax teira) gracefully swimming around the wreck, and for the master of disguise, the Painted Frogfish (Antennarius pictus), often blending seamlessly with its surroundings. Assorted species of colorful Nudibranch (Nudibranchia spp.) also add to the vibrant macro life on display here.

Diving Conditions and Certification

We classify the Cross Wreck as an intermediate difficulty dive site. While the Dampier Strait is known for its strong currents, this particular dive site typically experiences a mild current, offering a relaxed exploration of the wreck. The water temperature in Raja Ampat is consistently warm, with divers enjoying comfortable conditions ranging from 27°C to 30°C. To dive the Cross Wreck, an Advanced Open Water certification is required, ensuring divers have the necessary skills and experience for this type of dive site.

Safety and Exploration

As with any wreck dive, we must be mindful of potential hazards at the Cross Wreck, including the overhead environment and sharp metal edges. The maximum depth of 18 meters makes this a reasonably shallow wreck, but proper buoyancy control is always essential. We strongly recommend that any penetration into the wreck's interior be undertaken only by divers with appropriate wreck diving certification and experience, due to the inherent risks of an overhead environment.
