Diving Conditions and Topography

Mike's Point is renowned for its strong and often unpredictable currents, including the potential for down currents, particularly during a falling tide. For this reason, we recommend this dive site for advanced divers holding an Advanced Open Water certification or higher, who are comfortable with challenging conditions and possess excellent buoyancy control. Diving with an experienced local instructor who understands the intricate tidal patterns is absolutely crucial for a safe and rewarding experience.

The topography of Mike's Point is dramatic and diverse. Divers will find steep reef walls, striking pinnacles, and numerous overhangs and rocky crevices that provide shelter from the current. The wall eventually transitions into sloping reef areas, and a shallow plateau offers a perfect spot for safety stops. A notable feature is a swim-through cave located at approximately 9 meters, adding an exciting element to the dive. The maximum depth divers can reach here is typically over 30 meters, with some sections descending beyond 40 meters, though most of the dive is conducted along the upper sections of the wall. Water temperatures are consistently warm, averaging between 26°C and 30°C year-round.

Marine Life Encounters

Divers can expect to be enveloped by massive schools of fusiliers and jacks, which in turn draw in larger predators. We frequently encounter Grey Reef Sharks, along with Whitetip and Blacktip Reef Sharks patrolling the reef edges. Keep an eye out for impressive Giant Trevally, Chevron Barracuda, and even Spanish Mackerel hunting in the blue.

Beyond the pelagic action, the reef itself is teeming with life. Divers will discover vibrant Oriental Sweetlips, often schooling in the overhangs, and both Hawksbill and Green Turtles gracefully gliding along the wall. Look closely among the rich soft corals, huge black corals, giant gorgonians, and sponges that adorn the walls, and you might spot Moray Eels, Snapper, Butterflyfish, Angelfish, and Anthias. Mike's Point is also a fantastic site for macro enthusiasts, with opportunities to find nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, mantis shrimps, and scorpionfish hidden in the crevices.

Local lore tells of how this small island was mistakenly bombed by the U.S. Air Force during World War II, as the powerful currents around it were thought to be the wake of a camouflaged Japanese warship. The resulting impact created unique underwater rock formations, grooves, and overhangs that have since become perfect habitats for a multitude of critters and fish. Remarkably, the reef has recovered spectacularly from this past event, now boasting fantastic corals and a thriving ecosystem, making it a testament to nature's resilience.
