About This Dive Site

Sauwandarek Jetty: A Raja Ampat Gem for All Divers

Nestled in a sheltered bay on the southwestern coast of Mansuar Island, within the famed Dampier Strait of Raja Ampat, Sauwandarek Jetty is a dive site that truly caters to every level of diver. We will find a vibrant underwater world that combines the ease of a beginner-friendly location with the incredible biodiversity Raja Ampat is renowned for. This site is celebrated for its calm conditions, making it perfect for those seeking a relaxed critter dive or an introduction to the wonders of the Coral Triangle.

Diving Conditions and Site Features

Sauwandarek Jetty offers a gentle descent along a sloping reef, with a typical depth range of 4 meters to 20 meters, though divers can explore stunning coral bommies in the 18-30 meter range. The water temperature here is consistently warm and inviting, usually ranging from 27°C to 30°C, providing comfortable diving year-round. While the Dampier Strait is known for its strong currents, Sauwandarek's natural bay provides protection, ensuring mild currents that are ideal for leisurely exploration. An Open Water certification is all that is required to experience the magic of this dive site.

The dive begins around the jetty structure itself, which acts as an artificial reef, attracting schooling fish. From there, the reef gently slopes to the east and west, adorned with impressive rock formations, healthy hard and soft corals, and abundant sea fans. Divers will also notice coral regrowth programs in action, with structures like an airplane supporting new coral growth, showcasing conservation efforts in the area.

Encounters with Marine Life

Sauwandarek Jetty is often referred to as the "Turtle City of Raja Ampat," and divers will quickly understand why. We can frequently encounter Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas), including a large resident female known to rest in the rock crevices, offering fantastic photographic opportunities.

Macro enthusiasts will be delighted by the incredible array of smaller creatures. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive Blue-ringed Octopus (Hapalochlaena lunulata), delicate Ornate Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus), and, if you are lucky, tiny Pygmy Seahorses camouflaged among the corals. Mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus) are also a highlight, often seen performing their enchanting mating dance at dusk. We will also find numerous nudibranchs adding splashes of color to the reef.

For those who appreciate larger marine life, the jetty area is home to a large school of curious Longfin Batfish (Platax teira), known to playfully interact with divers. Schools of Oriental Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus vittatus), fusiliers, trevally, and snapper are common sights, particularly around the jetty and reef slopes. If we venture a bit deeper, we might spot Tasselled Wobbegong (Eucrossorhinus dasypogon) sharks resting under ledges, or even barracuda and bump-head parrotfish patrolling the reef, especially during tidal changes.

Safety and Recommendations

While the currents are generally mild within the bay, we must always be aware of boat traffic, especially when surfacing near the jetty. We recommend following your instructor's guidance and using a surface marker buoy when appropriate. Sauwandarek Jetty is truly a dive site that offers an unforgettable experience, combining stunning coral topography with an abundance of diverse marine life, making it a must-visit location in Raja Ampat.
