A reef associated with Ernie’s Cave
Capt’n Gregg’s uses the combined name Ernie’s Point / Cave. Action Divers describes Ernie’s Cave as a reef with small pinnacles and gorgonian fans, rising toward shallow water around 5 m. Its two cave features are described at about 22 m and 27 m.
Choose a route that matches your experience
Action Divers labels the dive advanced and describes either a slack-tide outing or a drift from Monkey Beach. Confirm whether your operator means the point, the surrounding reef or the cave features, and agree the intended route and depth. Mention of a cave is not an assessment that entering it is appropriate.
Unresolved details
The source lists a 27 m maximum; it does not support the earlier 40 m limit for this guide. Naming does not establish that every operator follows the same route. Current visibility, temperature, access arrangements and wildlife frequency remain unverified.
Reef life around the outcrops
Capt'n Gregg's Ernie's Point entry describes sea fans on the rocky outcrops and reports smaller groupers, glassfish and schooling fish. These are the Point entry's highlights, not wildlife transferred from the separately listed Ernie's Cave. They provide no dated census and do not establish a suitable route into either cavern.
A dated account of the surrounding reef
Michael McFadyen’s log for 8 September 2023 records an outing named Ernie’s Cave that did not visit the cave itself. He describes sand with coral boulders, feather stars and several large gorgonians. Around one large coral rock he counted seven lionfish underneath. His other observations included nudibranchs, a large pufferfish, batfish, a moray, anemones with clownfish, flutemouths and butterflyfish. This is evidence for that particular outing’s reef interest, rather than a checklist of residents.
The log records reaching 28 m and changing direction after encountering an opposing current. Those details describe his actual dive, not a recommended route or a reason to extend another operator’s maximum depth. He also explicitly reports finding no pygmy seahorses on the gorgonians. Keeping that negative observation alongside the fish sightings avoids turning suitable-looking habitat into a sighting claim. His earlier 5 September entry describes the cave features as very low overhangs, adding useful context to the name.
The openings are not the whole dive
Casalay places Ernie’s Point between Monkey Beach and Dungon Wall. It warns of strong cross currents and says the two small cave features are not wide enough to penetrate. Its shallower feature is described at 21 m, compared with Action Divers’ approximate 22 m. That small difference remains source-specific. Together, the operator’s description and the dated reef-only outing make it possible to discuss an external reef visit without treating entry into an opening as a necessary part of the experience.
