Welcome to Monkey Beach, a highly regarded dive site nestled on the northern coast of Mindoro Island, just east of Sabang Bay in Puerto Galera. Renowned for its accessibility and rich biodiversity, this dive site is a fantastic choice for divers of all levels, particularly those with an Open Water certification seeking a relaxed yet rewarding underwater experience.
Divers will find Monkey Beach to be a gentle, sprawling coral slope that gradually descends to a maximum depth of around 20 meters, though some areas can reach up to 25 meters. The average depth for exploration typically hovers between 5 and 18 meters, making it ideal for extended bottom times and beginner training. The water temperature in Puerto Galera is consistently warm, averaging around 27-28°C year-round, with a range from 25°C in cooler months (December-February) to 30°C during the warmer periods (March-October). While generally calm, divers should be aware that a moderate current can sometimes pick up, offering a gentle drift along the reef.
The dive site features a diverse topography, combining vibrant reef sections with sandy, muck-diving areas. We will explore a colorful mishmash of hard and soft corals, sponges, and sea fans that adorn the slope. Adding to the intrigue, divers can also discover the wreck of a small yacht or sailboat lying on its side at approximately 18-20 meters, which has become an artificial reef teeming with life.
Monkey Beach is a macro photographer's paradise and a haven for those who appreciate the smaller, more intricate wonders of the ocean. Divers can expect to encounter a remarkable array of marine life, including the vibrant Peacock Mantis Shrimp, often seen darting across the sandy patches. Keep an eye out for numerous species of Nudibranchs, which are incredibly common here, along with flatworms and various other crustaceans.
The reef is bustling with schooling Fusiliers, along with anthias, damselfish, snappers, batfish, Moorish idols, gobies, basslets, wrasses, triggerfish, pufferfish, and cods. We frequently spot the majestic Green Sea Turtle gracefully grazing among the corals or resting on the sandy bottom. Red Lionfish are also a common sight, often found hiding in crevices. Other notable residents include various moray eels, banded sea snakes, juvenile batfish, and scorpionfish. With a keen eye, you might even spot pygmy seahorses clinging to sea fans.
Monkey Beach truly rewards those who take their time to explore its intricate habitats, offering endless opportunities for observation and underwater photography.
