Kalipayan: The Happy Wall of Panglao

Welcome to Kalipayan, affectionately known as the "Happy Wall," a truly accessible and rewarding dive site just off Alona Beach in Panglao. This house reef is a favorite among divers for its gentle conditions and abundant macro life, making it perfect for all skill levels, from training dives to relaxed night explorations. Divers will find Kalipayan reachable by a short banca ride, typically around 6 minutes from Alona Beach, or even a leisurely swim from shore.

Dive Site Features and Conditions

Kalipayan offers a diverse underwater landscape, starting in sandy shallows at approximately 3 to 5 meters. From there, the reef gently slopes before transforming into a vibrant coral-draped vertical wall. This wall descends to a maximum depth of around 20 to 25 meters, adorned with colorful soft corals, sea fans, and small coral heads. Beyond the wall, the terrain transitions into a sandy slope, where divers might encounter a disintegrated wooden bangka resting at deeper profiles, around 32 to 33 meters.

The conditions at Kalipayan are consistently calm, with divers typically experiencing mild to no currents, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable dive. The water temperature in Panglao is inviting year-round, generally ranging from 25°C to 30°C, with summer months often seeing temperatures between 27°C and 30°C. Visibility here is often excellent, allowing for clear views of the vibrant marine ecosystem.

Marine Life Encounters

Kalipayan is a macro photographer's dream, teeming with an incredible array of small, fascinating creatures. Divers will find a treasure trove of marine life hiding along the wall and in the sandy areas. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive Thorny Seahorse (Hippocampus histrix) and the beautifully camouflaged Ornate Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus). We often encounter the captivating Wonderpus (Wunderpus photogenicus) and the vibrant Flamboyant Cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi), known for its dazzling color changes.

The site is also home to a spectacular variety of Nudibranch (Nudibranchia spp.), offering endless opportunities for identification. Divers can also spot the well-camouflaged Painted Frogfish (Antennarius pictus). While primarily a macro haven, larger species like the impressive Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) can sometimes be seen patrolling the deeper sections. Other common sightings include moray eels, scorpionfish, lionfish, and various reef fish.

Diving Recommendations and Safety

Kalipayan is classified as a beginner-friendly dive site, making it an excellent location for new divers, refresher courses, and Open Water Diver training. An Open Water certification is required to explore this beautiful dive site. While the conditions are generally placid, divers should always be mindful of their depth, especially along the wall. As with any popular house reef, boat traffic can be a hazard, so we recommend using a surface marker buoy (SMB) upon ascent and staying vigilant, particularly when surfacing.
