About This Dive Site

A wreck name that needs a precise briefing

Angelyn’s Dive Resort describes Monkey Wreck as the largely collapsed remains of a roughly 20 m local boat, with a 40–45 m depth range and strong currents. Its separate Monkey Beach section mentions a wreck at about 18 m. These descriptions should not be treated as the same dive.

Conflicting references remain

La Laguna Beach Club lists Monkey Wreck at 42 m and names Monkey Beach separately. Capt’n Gregg’s gives 40–45 m on its chart but describes a shallow overturned wreck in its prose. The available accounts do not resolve whether every operator uses Monkey Wreck for the same remains.

Confirm the identity before choosing the dive

Ask which wreck is intended, the planned depth and required training, and how current affects the outing. The earlier 18–22 m range and beginner classification are not established for the deep wreck described by Angelyn’s. Exact coordinates, current conditions, vessel history and wildlife encounter rates remain unverified. This partial guide does not provide penetration or decompression instructions.

Two separately named wrecks

Garden of Eden lists Monkey Wreck and New Monkey Wreck separately. Its Monkey Wreck entry describes a cargo boat about 20 metres long, reportedly sunk in 1993, east of Sabang Point at 40 metres. Length is not depth. The operator warns that the wreck can move in swell; present stability has not been independently established.

Its New Monkey Wreck entry instead describes a steel boat about 20 metres long, reportedly sunk in 2001 off Monkey Beach, with a listed maximum depth of 20 metres. Feather stars and lionfish belong to that shallower entry. These separate headings help explain why booking by the short name alone is ambiguous. They do not prove which remains another operator means, identify either vessel by registry or resolve the conflicting historical accounts.

Updated operator listing

At the October 7, 2026 source check, Capt’n Gregg’s dedicated Monkey Wreck entry asks visitors to confirm depth with the dive shop and describes a shallow overturned boat against a short wall. That current entry supersedes the earlier chart reference quoted above as a description of what the page now displays. The site's precise identity remains unresolved.

Fish life and terrain in the deep-wreck account

Angelyn's page, captured on 7 October 2026, calls the deep wreck a local 20 m pig boat that sank in 1993 and says many types of fish make the mostly collapsed hull their home, naming angelfish, triggerfish, cod, batfish, snappers, sweetlips and rays, with a series of steep walls starting at the back of the wreck. Garden of Eden's entry for the 40 m wreck, captured the same day, adds a position east of Sabang Point about five minutes by boat, visibility up to 20 m and an average depth of 35 m.

Two dated logs of a shallower wreck

Michael McFadyen's report of an August and September 2023 trip with Capt'n Gregg's places Monkey Wreck about 700 metres east of the resort off Monkey Beach and describes a small 10 metre steel vessel with no superstructure lying on its port side at 24 metres, with 29 degrees C water and about 20 metres visibility in September. A Lakwatsero post about a June 2011 dive with Big Apple Dive Resorts calls the site Monkey Beach (Monkey Wreck) and describes a sloping sandy bottom to 25 metres with a small sailboat on its port side housing a school of yellow spotted sweetlips. Both logs fit the shallow wreck of Capt'n Gregg's current entry, not the 40 to 45 m vessel; they are recorded here, not reconciled.
