Pinnacle · Bommie · Drop-off

Prepare for an unforgettable intermediate dive experience at Bait Reef's iconic Stepping Stones, a signature dive site roughly 65 km northeast of Airlie Beach within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This dive site is renowned for its unique topography and abundant marine life, making it a highlight for divers exploring the Whitsundays' outer reef.
The Stepping Stones are a captivating chain of 18 or more flat-topped coral pinnacles and bommies that rise dramatically from the sandy seafloor, some reaching within a meter of the surface. These "stepping stones" create a labyrinthine underwater landscape, featuring interesting channels, caves, and drop-offs. Divers will find the pinnacles richly adorned with a vibrant array of corals, including beautiful gorgonians, sea whips, and diverse soft and hard corals.
This protected marine sanctuary is teeming with life. We can expect to encounter numerous species, including the majestic Reef Manta Ray (Mobula alfredi), particularly between May and September when they frequent cleaning stations. Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) are common, often seen gracefully gliding through the water. Divers will also regularly spot the impressive Humphead Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), also known as Napoleon Wrasse, and the sleek Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus).
Keep an eye out for the fascinating Ornate Wobbegong (Orectolobus ornatus), often found resting in the channels between the pinnacles. The reef is also home to a colourful assortment of Parrotfish (Scarus sp.), Coral Trout (Plectropomus leopardus), and schools of Diagonal-banded Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus lineatus). Occasional sightings of Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) add to the thrill. Beyond the listed species, divers may also spot batfish, gropers, moray eels, giant clams, and nudibranchs. During the cooler months from May to October, humpback whales are seasonal visitors to the Whitsundays, and their songs can sometimes be heard underwater.
The Stepping Stones offer an intermediate diving experience. The depth range around the pinnacles typically spans from 5 m to 25 m. However, the adjoining walls can drop to a maximum depth of 40 m, adding an element of depth management for divers. Water temperatures generally range from 22°C to 29°C, offering comfortable diving conditions year-round. Visibility is often crystal-clear, ranging from 15 m to 30 m, with peak visibility typically occurring in winter (June-September).
Currents at this dive site can be variable, particularly through the inter-pinnacle channels, and can be strong. Therefore, we highly recommend timing your dive for slack tide to ensure the most enjoyable and safest experience. While Open Water certification is the minimum requirement, an Advanced Open Water certification is recommended due to the potential for variable currents and deeper sections.
