Reef · Coral-garden

Welcome to Cod Hole, a world-renowned dive site on Ribbon Reef #10, near Lizard Island, that truly defines the Great Barrier Reef liveaboard experience. This iconic location, made famous by pioneering photographers Ron and Valerie Taylor in the 1970s, offers an unparalleled opportunity for close encounters with magnificent marine life.
Cod Hole is primarily a reef and coral garden dive site, characterized by vibrant coral slopes, bommies, and sandy channels. Divers will find depths ranging from a shallow 3 meters to a maximum depth of 40 meters, with many of the key interaction areas around 8 to 15 meters. Water temperatures are comfortably tropical, typically ranging from 22°C to 29°C, making it a fantastic year-round destination. While generally calm, currents can be variable and occasionally strong, particularly in the passages between reefs. For this reason, while Open Water certification is sufficient, we highly recommend Advanced Open Water certification to fully enjoy the site, especially when currents are present.
Access to Cod Hole is predominantly via liveaboard trips from Cairns or Port Douglas, or day trips from Lizard Island, given its remote location approximately 100-140 kilometers north of Cairns. The best visibility, often between 25 to 35 meters, is typically experienced from September to November, coinciding with calm surface conditions. June through October is also an excellent time to visit, with the added possibility of encountering dwarf minke whales seasonally in the Ribbon Reefs.
The undisputed stars of Cod Hole are the giant Potato Cod (Epinephelus tukula). These impressive groupers, often reaching up to 2 meters in length and weighing over 100 kilograms, are incredibly curious and accustomed to divers due to decades of controlled feeding by divemasters. Divers can expect these gentle giants, characterized by their pale bluish-grey bodies with large dark blotches, to approach closely, often nudging divers in a friendly manner. It's a truly unique interaction that leaves a lasting impression.
Beyond the Potato Cod, the dive site teems with other fascinating species:
The coral gardens are also home to a diverse array of other reef fish, including sweetlips, trevally, barracuda, snappers, goatfish, fusiliers, anemonefish, bumphead parrotfish, lionfish, trumpetfish, pufferfish, and various colorful basslets. Keep an eye out for green sea turtles, giant clams, and a variety of macro life like nudibranchs and ghost pipefish.
While Cod Hole offers an exhilarating experience, divers should be aware of potential hazards. Variable currents can be a factor, especially in certain areas, and boat traffic around the mooring points requires vigilance. The site's reputation for shark encounters is well-founded, with whitetip and grey reef sharks being common. While generally not aggressive, we always recommend maintaining respectful distance and observing their behavior. The notion of "bull sharks" being a regular feature, as some outlying accounts suggest, is not supported by the consistent experience of dive operators and diver logs, which confirm the presence of other, typically less aggressive, reef shark species.
Cod Hole remains a benchmark stop on every Ribbon Reefs liveaboard itinerary, offering an unforgettable blend of iconic marine encounters and pristine coral environments.
