Lighthouse Bommie: A Ribbon Reefs Gem

Nestled within the renowned Ribbon Reefs, Lighthouse Bommie is an intermediate dive site that promises an unforgettable underwater experience. This vibrant pinnacle, often described as a "giant tower of coral," rises dramatically from the seafloor, offering a diverse ecosystem for divers to explore.

Dive Conditions and Depths

Lighthouse Bommie is an isolated pinnacle that generally rises from a sandy seabed at depths of around 24 to 30 meters, ascending to approximately 5 meters below the surface. This impressive structure provides an ideal profile for multi-level diving, allowing us to explore both its deeper edges and its shallower, coral-rich top. While currents are typically mild, we recommend an Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification to fully appreciate the deeper sections and manage any potential mild currents that may be present. Open Water certification is accepted, making this a widely accessible dive site.

Water temperatures in the Ribbon Reefs are consistently warm, generally ranging from 23°C in winter to 28°C in summer. The warmest temperatures are usually experienced around March, while the coldest are in early September, though still comfortable for diving.

Marine Life Encounters

Lighthouse Bommie is a "creature feature" dive site, renowned for its abundant fish life and exciting pelagic encounters. Divers will find themselves surrounded by massive schools of Fusiliers, with Giant Trevally and Chevron Barracuda often patrolling the pinnacle's edges. Keep an eye out for resident Green Sea Turtles, which frequently use the bommie as a cleaning station. We may also spot Spotted Eagle Rays gracefully gliding by. For those with a keen eye for macro life, Network Pipefish can be found among the corals.

However, the true highlight for many divers at Lighthouse Bommie is the opportunity to encounter Dwarf Minke Whales. Every year, from June to July, these inquisitive baleen whales migrate through the Great Barrier Reef, and the Ribbon Reefs are the only known predictable gathering of this species on the planet. Lighthouse Bommie is considered one of the most reliable spots for these incredible interactions, offering a unique chance for divers to observe these gentle giants up close as they pass close inshore.

Site Features and Hazards

As a pinnacle and bommie dive site, Lighthouse Bommie offers a fascinating topography to explore. While not primarily known for its extensive coral growth, the top of the bommie boasts lovely growths of various colored corals. The isolation of this dive site attracts larger fish and offers a vibrant ecosystem. Potential hazards include the depth and occasional mild currents, which are manageable for certified divers.
