Welcome to the captivating Giant Clams dive site in Puerto Galera, a truly unique underwater sanctuary that promises an unforgettable experience for divers of all levels. Nestled within a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, this dive site is renowned for its remarkable conservation efforts and incredible biodiversity.
The Giant Clams dive site is an ideal location for beginner divers, requiring only an Open Water certification. We will find calm and sheltered conditions here, with typically mild or even no current, making it perfect for those building confidence or enjoying a relaxed exploration. The depth at this dive site ranges from a shallow 4 m to a maximum depth of 18 m, with an average depth of around 10 m, allowing for extended bottom times and ample opportunity to observe the marine life. Divers can expect comfortable water temperatures, typically ranging from 26°C to 30°C year-round.
As divers descend, we will discover a fascinating landscape that transitions from a vibrant reef to expansive seagrass meadows. This dive site is a protected area, serving as a farm and sanctuary for massive Tridacna gigas clams. These magnificent bivalves are the stars of the show, with some exceeding a meter across and even reaching up to 1.5 meters wide, some hundreds of years old. Their colorful mantles create a stunning visual display against the sandy bottom.
Beyond the giant clams, the site offers exceptional muck diving opportunities. Divers with a keen eye for macro life will be rewarded with sightings of incredible creatures hiding within the seagrass and sandy patches. We can encounter the elusive Tigertail Seahorse (Hippocampus comes), and if we are particularly lucky, we might spot the masters of camouflage, the Mimic Octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) and the equally fascinating Wonderpus (Wunderpus photogenicus). Large Barrel Sponges (Xestospongia testudinaria) also dot the landscape, adding to the rich tapestry of the reef.
While the Giant Clams dive site is generally very safe, divers should be aware of a few considerations. The primary hazard is behavioral: we must never place our hands inside the large clams, as their powerful mantles can clamp shut if they sense a threat, making it very difficult to extricate a hand without special tools. Additionally, as with any dive site featuring abundant sessile life, divers should maintain excellent buoyancy control to avoid accidental entanglement with corals or sponges. We recommend bringing a good dive instructor or guide who can expertly point out the well-camouflaged macro creatures and ensure a safe and enjoyable dive.
