Karpata: Bonaire's Northern Gem

Often hailed as a "best of Bonaire" pick and the grand finale of the island's northern shore road, Karpata is a truly spectacular dive site that promises unforgettable underwater encounters. We consider this an intermediate dive, perfect for those with an Open Water Diver certification, though an Advanced Open Water certification is recommended to fully explore the deeper sections of the magnificent wall.

Diving Conditions and Entry

Divers will find the water temperature consistently warm, typically ranging between 25°C and 28°C year-round, making for comfortable diving conditions. Visibility here is often exceptional, providing stunning panoramic views that are a dream for wide-angle photographers. Currents at Karpata can be variable, and divers should be mindful of potential surge, especially during entry and exit over the rocky shallows. A concrete platform and old steps facilitate access to the water, but conditions can be sporty with waves.

Exploring the Reef and Wall

Once submerged, divers are greeted by a vibrant terrace where impressive elkhorn coral climbs towards the surface. The reef then dramatically falls away into a steep drop-off, a classic wall dive experience cut by sandy channels. The maximum depth at Karpata can reach up to 40 m, with many divers exploring between 6 m and 30 m. You'll also discover century-old ship anchors embedded in the coral, silent relics of the island's plantation history.

It's important to note that Karpata was temporarily closed due to Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) in 2022. However, it has since reopened following adjusted restrictions in October 2023. The marked dive site sits just outside the main marine reserve boundary in this area, so we recommend heading south (to your left) from the entry point to explore the designated dive area.

Marine Life Encounters

Karpata is teeming with diverse marine life. Divers frequently encounter majestic Spotted Eagle Rays gliding gracefully through the blue, and keep an eye out for the distinctive Red Lionfish. The site is also home to formidable Great Barracudas and the enigmatic Green Moray Eel. Schools of vibrant Stoplight Parrotfish and electric blue Blue Tangs add a splash of color to the reef. Lucky divers may spot a critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle, often seen foraging among the corals. For those with a keen eye, the elusive Longlure Frogfish can sometimes be found camouflaged among the sponges and corals. The healthy hard and soft corals, including significant patches of Elkhorn Coral, create a rich habitat for this incredible biodiversity.
