Welcome to Maaya Thila, a world-renowned dive site often hailed as one of the Maldives' finest, especially celebrated for its thrilling night dives. This near-circular, submerged pinnacle, approximately 80 meters across, rises dramatically from depths exceeding 30 meters to just a few meters below the surface. Designated a Marine Protected Area since 1995, Maaya Thila offers an unparalleled underwater experience.
Maaya Thila is an intermediate-difficulty dive site, making it ideal for divers holding an Advanced Open Water certification. The reef top begins at around 6 to 10 meters, with the reef edge dropping steeply to depths of 30 meters and beyond. An average dive here might be around 18 meters. Divers will find a fascinating topography featuring numerous overhangs, caves, and swim-throughs to explore. The water temperature is consistently warm, typically ranging from 26°C to 29°C year-round, though it can vary slightly between 25°C and 30°C depending on the season.
Currents at Maaya Thila are variable and can range from moderate to strong and unpredictable, which is a key factor attracting the abundant pelagic life. While it is possible to circumnavigate the thila in a single dive when currents are favorable, we recommend staying alert to conditions and listening to your instructor's guidance, as strong currents are a known hazard.
Maaya Thila is a vibrant hub of marine biodiversity, promising incredible encounters both day and night. During daylight hours, divers will find the reef teeming with activity:
Maaya Thila truly comes alive after sunset, earning its reputation as arguably the best night dive site in the Maldives. As darkness falls, the reef transforms into a bustling hunting ground.
Whether you explore its vibrant reefs by day or witness the dramatic nocturnal hunting spectacle, Maaya Thila promises an exhilarating and memorable diving adventure.
