Drop-off · Wall · Drift · Channel

Prepare for one of the Maldives' most iconic and thrilling dive experiences at Hammerhead Point, also known as Rasdhoo Madivaru. This advanced dive site is renowned globally for its pre-dawn encounters with schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks. It demands an Advanced Open Water certification and significant experience with deep diving and strong currents.
The adventure begins before sunrise, typically with a pre-dawn departure around 5:30 to 6:00 AM. Divers will descend into the inky blue water, often in darkness, along the ocean-facing wall of Rasdhoo's Madivaru channel. We will hang in the open blue, off the drop-off, as the first light breaks, patiently waiting for the magnificent scalloped hammerheads (Sphyrna lewini) to rise from the deep. While hammerheads are resident year-round, the peak season for sightings is generally from December to April, with January to March often considered the optimal period due to calmer seas and better visibility. Sighting rates are approximately 50/50 on any given morning, with typically 2-5 sharks, though larger schools have been reported. This is a deep blue-water dive, often to depths of 30-40+ meters, where buoyancy control without a visual reference is crucial.
Beyond the star attraction, Hammerhead Point is a vibrant hub for pelagic species. Divers will frequently encounter impressive Grey Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) patrolling the wall and Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) resting in overhangs. Keep an eye out for large Dogtooth Tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor) and Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) actively hunting along the reef edge. The surrounding blue water occasionally yields graceful Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) and majestic Reef Manta Rays (Mobula alfredi), especially between November and April when they visit cleaning stations within the atoll. While less common, lucky divers might even spot a passing Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) or the incredibly fast Indo-Pacific Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus).
Hammerhead Point is characterized by its dramatic drop-offs and walls, forming part of a horseshoe-shaped reef structure adjacent to Madivaru island. This dive site is a drift dive within a channel, making strong currents a consistent factor. The maximum depth for this dive site typically ranges from 30-40+ meters. Water temperatures generally range from 26°C to 29°C, though they can reach up to 31.2°C during warmer months. Visibility is often excellent, ranging from 25-40 meters, particularly during the dry season.
Given the strong currents, significant depths, and the potential for decompression obligation, this dive site is strictly for advanced divers. We require an Advanced Open Water certification, and divers should have solid experience with deep diving and maintaining buoyancy in open water. Potential hazards include depth, strong currents, decompression obligation, and encounters with potentially dangerous marine life. We recommend a full wetsuit due to the depth and early morning starts, even with the warm water.
