For experienced divers seeking an exhilarating challenge, Mapating is arguably Anilao at its most serious and rewarding. This submerged seamount, located off the far side of Maricaban Island, is a pinnacle of advanced diving, renowned for its dramatic topography and the strong currents that demand precision and expertise.

Dive Site Overview

Divers will find a fascinating underwater landscape at Mapating. The dive site begins with a shallow plateau, typically found between 12-18 m, which then dramatically falls away into a series of stepped drop-offs and walls. As we descend, the true spectacle unfolds: around 25-45 m, a prominent cave mouth, roughly 10 m wide, punches into the cliff face. This cave extends approximately 10 m before splitting into twin tunnels, creating an intriguing overhead environment. This cavern and cave system, starting around 45 m, is a highlight for those with appropriate technical diving certification and experience.

Marine Life

Despite its name, which means "lots of sharks" in Tagalog, sightings of Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) are now less common, though they can sometimes be found resting on sandy ledges during daylight hours. However, divers can frequently encounter impressive Marble Rays (Taeniurops meyeni) near the cave entrance. The strong blue-water currents attract a wealth of pelagic species, including powerful Dogtooth Tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor) and schooling Bigeye Trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) streaming past the rock. Keep an eye out for Grey Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) patrolling the deeper blue. Inside the dark chambers of the cave, we are often treated to the eerie, bioluminescent glow of Flashlight Fish (Anomalops katoptron), also known as eyelight fish, creating a truly unique spectacle. The shallower reef areas are also home to vibrant schools of Sea Goldies (Pseudanthias squamipinnis).

Diving Conditions & Certification

• Difficulty: advanced
• Certification Required: Advanced Open Water. For deeper penetration into the cave system, technical diving training and equipment, including redundant gas systems and decompression planning, are essential.
• Depth: Divers will find depths ranging from a shallow plateau at around 12-18 m, dropping off to over 40 m, with the cave entrance starting around 25-45 m.
• Current: Mapating is characterized by strong, often unforgiving blue-water currents. We strongly recommend timing your dive around slack tide to mitigate these conditions.
• Water Temperature: Water temperature typically ranges from 24°C to 29°C, varying seasonally.
• Hazards: Key hazards include strong current, significant depth, an overhead environment within the cave, and the potential for decompression obligation due to the depths involved. Proper planning and an experienced instructor or guide are crucial.
