The underwater landscape consists of stunning reef formations, expansive coral gardens, and scattered bommies. These diverse habitats provide ample opportunities for exploration and discovery. While the dive site is within a protected six-knot zone, divers should remain aware of potential boat traffic during ascent and descent.
Michaelmas Cay is teeming with an impressive array of marine life, offering unforgettable encounters for every diver. As we explore the vibrant coral heads and reef flats, we are likely to spot graceful Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) gliding through the water. The reef is also home to charismatic species such as the impressive Humphead Wrasse (Napoleon) (Cheilinus undulatus), and we will marvel at the sheer size of numerous Giant Clams (Tridacna gigas) embedded in the reef. Look closely on the sandy bottoms for the beautifully patterned Blue-spotted Stingray (Kuhl's Maskray) (Neotrygon kuhlii). Colorful Coral Trout (Plectropomus leopardus) are a common sight, and clouds of various Butterflyfish (Chaetodon sp.) add a dynamic splash of color to the shallow coral gardens.
Combining its status as a critical seabird sanctuary with its vibrant and accessible underwater world, Michaelmas Cay stands out as one of Cairns' most rewarding outer-reef day trips. We highly recommend this dive site for its gentle conditions, rich biodiversity, and beautiful coral formations, promising an engaging and memorable diving experience for all Open Water certified divers.
