Reef · Drift · Drop-off

Prepare for an unforgettable intermediate diving experience at Norman Reef, a classic Outer Great Barrier Reef dive site nestled on the continental shelf, approximately 70-80 kilometers off the coast of Cairns. This renowned destination offers exceptional visibility, often exceeding 30 meters, making it a staple for day boats and liveaboards alike.
Norman Reef caters to Open Water certified divers and above, presenting a diverse underwater landscape. Divers will find shallow coral gardens that gracefully transition into dramatic drop-offs, with depths ranging from 5 m to a maximum depth of 30 m. The site is characterized by mild currents, making for generally relaxed drift dives. Water temperatures are tropical, typically ranging from 24°C in winter to 30°C in summer, ensuring comfortable diving year-round. We recommend being mindful of potential boat traffic and occasional surge, which are listed as hazards for this popular dive site.
Beneath the surface, divers can explore a fascinating topography that includes vibrant coral walls, scattered bommies, sandy channels, and intricate coral canyons. Norman Reef is also celebrated for its exciting caves and swim-through areas, with one dive site even featuring a small wreck.
Norman Reef is a thriving ecosystem, boasting a rich diversity of marine life that promises captivating encounters. Divers can reliably spot majestic Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and graceful Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus). Keep an eye out for the impressive Humphead Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), also known as Napoleon Wrasse, which are a common sight, including a friendly resident named Wally near the Great Adventures Pontoon.
Beyond these highlights, you can encounter a kaleidoscope of reef fish, including Clownfish nestled in anemones, Parrotfish, Butterflyfish, Angelfish, and Triggerfish. Other residents include Blacktip Reef Sharks, Hawksbill turtles, Giant Clams, Barracuda, Mackerel, Moray Eels, Nudibranchs, Lionfish, Giant Trevally, Anemonefish, Sea Cucumbers, Surgeonfish, Blue-spotted rays, Spangled Emperors, Red Bass, Drummers, Fusiliers, Garden Eels, Cuttlefish, and various other wrasses.
During the winter months, typically June and July, Norman Reef is often visited by curious Dwarf Minke Whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata subspecies) as they migrate through the Great Barrier Reef. While dedicated swim-with-minke whale expeditions often focus on the Ribbon Reefs further north, sightings at Norman Reef can offer an unforgettable bonus to your dive trip.
Divers consistently praise Norman Reef for its excellent visibility and the sheer diversity of marine life. While it can be a popular and sometimes crowded site due to its appeal, the extensive reef system offers numerous mooring locations and dive opportunities, ensuring a memorable experience for all.

The reef itself is beautiful but the number of boats and divers was overwhelming.
