Prepare for an exhilarating dive at West Escarceo, a premier dive site located at the exposed tip of the Escarceo peninsula in Puerto Galera. Known for its dynamic conditions, this site offers a thrilling drift experience for certified divers. We recommend this dive for those holding an Advanced Open Water certification or a Drift Specialty certification, as strong currents are a consistent feature here.
West Escarceo is characterized by a prominent sloping reef that begins around 5 meters and gradually descends to a sandy bottom, typically at 25 meters, with reported maximum depths reaching 30 meters. The reef's well-lit shallows are blanketed in robust, flow-adapted hard and soft corals, including impressive plate and table formations, alongside various tube sponges. Divers will find numerous cracks and crevices punctuating the coral landscape, providing shelter for smaller marine life.
The dive site is renowned for its strong currents, particularly during flood tides, which average around 1 knot but can intensify significantly. These high-velocity tidal currents pour off the Verde Island Passage, a globally recognized epicenter of marine biodiversity within the Coral Triangle. This constant flow of clean, nutrient-rich water fuels the exceptional health and vibrancy of the coral and fish life we encounter here.
The reliable currents at West Escarceo act as a conveyor belt, consistently delivering a spectacular array of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter schooling pelagics such as the impressive Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis), sleek Chevron Barracuda (Sphyraena qenie), and abundant Black Snapper (Macolor niger).
Beyond the schooling fish, we frequently spot Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) cruising along the reef, especially seasonally. Keep an eye out for blue-spotted stingrays on the sandy flats, moray eels hiding in crevices at various depths, and large pufferfish. The site also boasts an unusual abundance of camouflaged scorpionfish and octopus, so we encourage careful observation. The vibrant soft corals (Dendronephthya sp.) add a splash of color to this already lively underwater tapestry.
Water temperatures at West Escarceo are consistently warm, generally ranging between 25-29°C throughout the year, ensuring comfortable diving conditions. This dive site offers a dual nature: on strong flood tides, it transforms into an exhilarating drift where divers can "fly weightless" through the water. On calmer days, it provides a more leisurely exploration, ideal for underwater photography.
However, West Escarceo is a fast dive that demands attention and good buoyancy control. We emphasize the importance of dropping with your group and being ready to be swept along the reef by the current. This advanced drift dive promises an unforgettable experience in one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth.
